This means that if there are any unstressed syllables, whether many or few, between stressed ones, they occupy ap­proximately the same time between the stresses. Це означає, що якщо між наголошеними складами є ненаголошені, вони вимовляються за однаковий проміжок часу (навіть, якщо між першим та другим наголошеним складами один ненаголошений, а між другим та третім – шість, вони мають бути вимовлені за один проміжок часу). The greater number of unstressed syllables there is between the stressed ones the more weakly and rapidly they are pronounced. Чим більше ненаголошених складів між наголошеними, тим швидше ці ненаголошені склади вимовляються і тим вони слабші.

Every country has its customs.

In English as well as in Ukrainian words of more than one syllable have one or more stressed syllables. Every English word has a definite place for the stress and it cannot be changed. In polysyllabic words the secondary stress helps to create the correct speech rhythm. У багатоскладових словах вторинний наголос допомагає створити зручний ритм, інакше ми змушені були б на одному диханні швидко вимовити велику кількість ненаголошених складів.

Ритм української та російської мов також акцентний, але між ним та ритмом англійської мови існує важлива різниця.

The difference between rhythm in English and Ukrainian lies in the following.

In Ukrainian almost all the words of an intonation group are stressed, в українській мові наголошуються майже всі слова інтонаційної групи e.g.: Всі наші студенти працюють уфонолабораторії.

In English the rhythmic structure is different — all the notional words are stressed, the function-words are fitted in between the stressed ones. В англійській мові наголошуються значеннєві слова, а інші групи слів зазвичай не мають наголосу.

IV: The pronunciation of intonation groups is based upon rhythmic groups which contain one stressed syllable. Інтонаційні групи складаються з ритмічних груп. Ритмічна група, у свою чергу, має у своєму складі один наголошений склад та декілька ненаголошених.

Initial unstressed syllables (проклітіки) are attached to the first rhythmic group. Початкові ненаглошені склади інтонаційної групи, так звані проклітики, приєднуються до першої ритмічної групи. The unstressed syllables preceding the stressed ones are pronounced very quickly, the vowels in them are shortened ненаголошені склади, що передують наглошеному, вимовляються дуже швидко, голосні в них „слабкі”, e.g.: He works. He can work. He was at work.

The unstressed syllables that follow the stressed ones (енклітіки) are pronounced rather quickly. Ненаголошеніі склади, що слідують за наглошеними (енклітики) також вимовляються досить швидко. They form a cluster with stressed syl­lables. Вони „зливаються” з наголошеними складами. And it takes equal time to pronounce the stressed syllable plus any given number of the following unstressed syllables before the next stress,e.g.: ' six, 'sixty, 'sixtieth.

The influence of rhythm is very important. The time given to each rhythmic group tends to be unchanged though the number of unstressed syllables may be many or few. Each rhythmic group within an intonation group is given the same amount of time. If there are many unstressed syllables in a rhythmic group, they must be pronounced more quickly, e.g.:

а) At the bottom of Kent Road. (b) She's the best girl.

At the bottom of Ken ton Road. She's the ni cest girl.

At the bottom of Ken sington Road. She's the hap piest girl.

Practise II. Read the following rhythmic groups at equal intervals of time, making a new articulating effort with every stressed syllable. Speed up the pronunciation of unstressed syllables with an increase in their number.

One cold beer Fresh fried chips

Half a glass of …whiskey Lots of…fish…. and pizza
