Tomsk Polytechnic University is one of the oldest and largest technical universities in our country. It was founded in 1896.
The University is proud of its graduates who have become prominent scientists and public figures. Among them are academician N.N. Semeov – the Lenin and Noble prizes winner who developed the theory of chain reactions, K.I. Satpaev – the former president of Kazakh Academy of Sciences, N.I. Kamov – the chief designer of helicopters, N.V. Nikitin – the designer of TV tower in Ostankino, academician Vinogradov – an outstanding mathematician, the Lenin and State prizes winner, and others. Among the graduates there are over 300 academicians.

More than 22,365 students of all forms of education, 568 post-graduates and 48 doctorates are educated at TPU.
The students are admitted to the university on the basis of their USE tests results at school. Usually there are several applicants for every place at the university.
Tuition is mostly free of charge, but some students study on a contractual basis. The lectures are delivered by the highly qualified teachers. They usually combine teaching with research. Students do not have to pay for using books, for laboratory work and teaching aids. Most students receive scholarships. There are special higher scholarships for honor students.
The academic year is divided into two terms. The students are required to earn their end-of-term credits and pass examinations. Marks are entered into their record books. The students also have practical studies and seminars, conduct laboratory tests, carry out experiments and research work.
When the course of studies is completed and final examinations are successfully passed the graduate is awarded a degree. Best students who display outstanding results in scientific work may be offered the postgraduate course to write their Candidate dissertation.
The university has good facilities for studies and rest. The University campus has 21 laboratories and academic buildings specially designed and equipped for practical work and conducting experiments. Over 4,000 computerized workplaces are used in the educational process. At the university there is a library with 2,7 million books, 10,000 square meters of sports facilities, 750 places in the sanatorium and recreation centers, 7,848 rooms in the University dormitories, 960 places in canteens and cafes.
The University cooperates with foreign scientific institutions of the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Cyprus, South Korea, China, India, Pakistan and other countries. University teachers and students take an active part in international seminars, conferences and programs.
The university creates an environment motivating self-expression and effective problem solving; it worships knowledge and strives for success. That is why the motto of TPU is: "Knowledge. Liberty. Prosperity."
