Lesson Plan: Conversation Club Feb 2
Opening Topic: The Oscars!
1. Write on board: Oscars 2013
2. Ask the students if they have heard of the Oscars. If not, explain to them that it is the American awards show for the best films of the year.
3. Guessing Game:
Ask students which films they saw in 2012/2013. Have them write on a piece of paper their top 3 favorite films.
After they’ve written down their favorite films, have them play a guessing game. They must describe their favorite film without saying the title, nor the names of the actors/actresses. The other students have to guess which film it is. Finally, write all the names of the films on the board. Take a vote and find out which film is the most popular in the class.
4. Tell students that the following actors have been nominated for “best actor”:
(You might want to copy out these names on a slip of paper to give everyone so that they can recognize the names).
Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix, Denzel Washington.
Ask students to talk about these actors; Which ones do they know? Who do they like? Why? What makes these guys good actors?
5. Now, repeat for “best actress”:
Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhané Wallis, Naomi Watts
6. Now, ask students who they think are some examples of bad actors/ actresses and why?
7. Now, tell students that the following films have been nominated for “best film” (again, you should print these out on a sheet of paper for them).
Amour
Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
Les Misérables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
8. Chances are, the students have seen one, or two of these films. However, give them the following handout, and have them decide on which new films they would like to see, and have them explain why.
Handout: Conversation Club
Amour
In the final months of her life, a retired music teacher and her husband of sixty years struggle with the debilitating effects of two strokes on both her health and her quality of life. As Georges cares for the increasingly unhappy Anne, the pair finds the nature of their life together irrevocably changed.
Argo
When six Americans take refuge in the Canadian embassy in Tehran during the 1979 hostage crisis, U.S. government agent Tony Mendez turns to Hollywood for help. Working with a producer and a makeup artist, he devises a rescue mission that centers on the creation of a fake film production company scouting locations in Iran.
Beasts of the Southern Wild
In an isolated Louisiana swampland known as the Bathtub, young Hushpuppy and her father are part of a community that lives outside of the structure of modern society. When rising flood waters threaten the area, the young girl's resourcefulness and lively imagination are called into play as the region's residents face the approaching disaster.
Django Unchained
German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz buys a slave named Django and promises him his freedom once he has helped Schultz track down the criminals he is seeking. But Django has a wife who was sold off years ago, and his partnership with Schultz may offer him a chance to find her.
Les Misérables
In early 19th century France, Jean Valjean, a man imprisoned years earlier for stealing a loaf of bread, decides to break his parole following his release and assume a new identity. Although he succeeds in building a new life for himself, the relentless pursuit of Inspector Javert threatens the security of Valjean and his adopted daughter, Cosette.
Life of Pi
Young Pi, the son of zookeepers in Pondicherry, India, finds the world he knows swept away when his family sells the zoo and sets sail for Canada with a few of its remaining animals. A storm capsizes the ship and only Pi escapes, set adrift in a lifeboat that is also the refuge of an enormous Bengal tiger.
Lincoln
With the Civil War coming to a close and the freedom granted to the slaves by the Emancipation Proclamation called into question, Abraham Lincoln seeks to pass a thirteenth amendment to the Constitution that will outlaw slavery everywhere in the United States. Facing opposition from many quarters in Congress, Lincoln uses his vast political powers to gain allies in his fight
Silver Linings Playbook
Pat Solatano is released into his parents' care after eight months of treatment for a bipolar disorder. His recovery seems far from certain, however, when he stops taking his medication and becomes increasingly obsessed with winning back his estranged wife, a plan that leads him to embark on a complicated relationship with a troubled young woman whose husband has died.
Zero Dark Thirty
In the aftermath of 9/11, as the trail in the hunt for Osama bin Laden seems to grow cold, a determined CIA agent begins a painstaking, decade-long search for the Al Qaeda leader. For Maya, direct experience of terrorism steels her resolve to find bin Laden and leads her to trust her own instincts regarding the best course of investigation to pursue.
9. Write on the board: Fashion!
10. Ask the students if they think that any particular actors/actresses have good taste in fashion.
11. Then, watch the “best dressed” gallery on the official Oscar website.
Show the students each picture (there are ten) and have them raise their hands if they like the dress. Whether they do, or do not, they should explain why!

12. Now, ask students if they know about the “golden globes” awards ceremony. Explain to them that it is a less prestigious film awards ceremony, which also includes television. Have them watch the following two films:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvcqFxqYoxY
13. Ask the students if they have ever won an award. Ask the students how they would give a speech if they won a special award. Have them “pretend” that they’ve won the “Best English First Student” award. Have them write a speech for the reward and then have them read it to the class. Just give them 3-5 minutes to write something.
14. You can wrap up class with the following conversation topics:
Imagine that hollywood is going to make a film about your life. Who would you want to “play” you? Which actor/actress? Why?
Did you ever imagine becoming an actor/actress? Who would you want to be your leading man/woman?
Describe the best movie set you have ever seen. If you could live on that set, would you? If not, what movie set would be your dream house?
What is the worst movie you have ever seen? Why was it so bad? What would have made it better?
What is your favorite line or scene from a movie? What about it makes you remember it so well or like it so much?
Do you think movie stars should be paid millions of dollars? Do you think they are more or less entertaining than sports stars?
