WRITING A PERSONAL LETTER
Student’s Copy
(Butakova T. I.)
Friendly or Personal Letter
I LETTER FORMAT
A friendly letter is a way of communicating between two people who are usually well acquainted. There are many uses and reasons for writing a friendly letter, but usually friendly letters consist of topics on a personal level. Friendly letters can either be printed or hand-written. The friendly letter is typically less formal than that of a business letter.
You should write a friendly letter in the proper format:
As you see the letter has five parts:
● Heading in the right upper corner includes the address, line by line. The street address is on the first line, the city, state and zip code is on the second line, and the date - on the last line. In casual, in friendly letters the address is not necessary.
● Salutation (greeting) on the left may be formal, beginning with the word “Dear” and using the person’s given name or relationship, or it may be informal if appropriate. It always ends with a comma.
● The Body after skipping a line under the greeting is the main text, which includes the message written (the information you are writing in a letter). The tone is friendly and often includes news and invitations. It is written in the paragraph form. The first line of each paragraph is indented. Don’t forget to skip a line after the body.
● Closing. This short expression is always a few words on a single line under the body on the left. In the closing the first word is capitalized and there is a comma after the last word.
● Signature is your name. It goes under the closing.
Sometimes people add a postscript at the end of the letter. They write “P.S.”, add anything additional to the letter and then end it with their initials. You can also add a P.P.S. after that and a P.P.P.S. after that and so on.
Remember always to use the best handwriting so the addressee can read your letter. Use proper punctuation, spelling and grammar. Follow the ‘Golden rule’ of letter writing:
Write only the type of things that you would like to receive in a letter.
