Mr. Thomas Survet Division Acme Enginnering Company, Ins. 5868 Ranshawe Drive Omaha, NB 68131 January 5, 1990   Dear Mr. Weiss   Mr. Robert Miller, sales representative of the Caterpillar Company of Columbia and a long-time friend of my father, told me that when he saw you at a convention in Chicago recently, you indicated you would have two or three temporary positions open this summer in your division. Mr. Miller kindly offered to write you about me, but he urged me to write also.   By June, I will have completed my junior years in the Department of Civil Engineering at Ohio State University. Not only do I need to work this summer to finance my final year of college, but I also need to get some practical experience in surveying tracts on a large road building project such as your company is now engaged in. After checking with several of the highway contractors in this area, I have learned that all of them have already hired their quota of engineering students for next summer.   Among my instructors in civil engineering, the two men who know me best are Dr. Theodore Sloan, who says that he knows you, and Mr. A. M. Slater. Currently, I have a 3.2 quality-point average in all my subjects, but I have straight A's in all my engineering courses. For the last two quarters, I have worked as a laboratory assistant for Professor Sloan.   I am anxious to get experience in my future profession, and I am quite willing to establish temporary residence in Omaha during the summer. I own a four-cylinder sub-compact car that I could use to travel to the job site every day. I am in good health, and I would be available to work for long hours and at odd hours during the summer months.
