2. В сложноподчиненном предложении, в котором придаточное предложение начинается с союза before (прежде чем, до того как) the Past Perfect употребляется в главном предложении:

 

Betty had already cleaned the flat before her mother came home.

She had fallen out of love with him before the war was over.

Before I got an excellent mark in Physics I had studied very hard.

 

3. В сложноподчиненных предложениях с союзами hardly … when; scarcely … when; no sooner … than (едва …. как, не успел …. как). При этом имеет место частичная инверсия, т.е. глагол had занимает место перед подлежащим:

 

Hardly had he entered the room when he heard some noise.

No sooner had the bell gone than the teacher came into the classroom.

Scarcely had the mother opened the door when the children rushed to meet her.

Однако в предложениях с этими союзами возможен и прямой порядок слов:

 

He had hardly entered the room when he heard some noise.

The bell had no sooner gone than the teacher came into the classroom.

The mother had scarcely opened the door when the children rushed to meet her.

Exercise 136. Translate into Russian. Explain the usage of the Past Perfect.

And for the first time in more than twenty years she had found herself living in the city where she had been born. 3. They walked toward the house. It had been months since they had been there. They felt comforted by the charm of the house. It had always been a peaceful place. Ever since they had first set eyes on it, they had thought of it as a living thing. 4. It crossed her mind that she had not been able to go out much since she had arrived almost five weeks ago. 5. Scott was definitely worried by something. Exercise 139. Add a sentence with the Past Perfect using the notes.

 

1. Claire looked very suntanned when I saw her last week. (just / be on holiday).

3. I didn't have an umbrella, but that didn't matter. (the rain / stop)

4. When I got to the concert hall, they wouldn't let me in. (forget / my ticket)

Exercise 140. Make up a complex sentence com­bining two simple sentences.

Exercise 141. Make negative sentences using the words from the brackets and yet, according to the example.

Exercise 142. Transform the following before - clauses into after - clauses and vice versa, changing the tense of the verbs accordingly.

 

Example: Mother had returned before I went for a walk.

Mother returned after I had gone for a walk.

 

1. The rain began after we had come from the In­stitute. 2. She had fallen asleep before her family returned from the pictures. 3. She had cooked the cake be­fore the guests came. 4. Exercise 143. Join following pairs of sentences substituting the Past Perfect for the Past Simple in one of the clauses according to the sense. Make use of the conjunctions: after, before, when, till, until.

Когда я позвонила ей, она уже уехала на дачу. 8. Никто не знал, что случилось с ними. 9. Когда они вернулись из театра, служанка уже ушла домой. 10. После того, как он уехал на Се­вер, она ничего о нем не слышала.

С. Смиты жили в одном из пригородов Лондона. Когда они проснулись однажды утром, они увидели, что их машина исчезла. Они немедленно позвонили в полицию и сообщи­ли о краже. После этого они поехали на работу на автобусе. Когда они вернулись домой вечером, они с удивлением об­наружили, что вор вернул машину и припарковал ее на обыч­ном месте возле дома. Под одним из дворников был маленький конверт. Смиты быстро открыли его и нашли в нем записку. Человек, который ее написал, изви­нялся за то, что «позаимствовал» их машину. Он объяснил, что у него самого нет машины, а у его жены ночью начались роды, поэтому он взял их машину без разре­шения, чтобы отвезти ее в больницу. В конверте также были два билета на известный мюзикл на субботу. Смиты очень обрадовались, потому что они давно хотели посмотреть это шоу, но им не удавалось достать билеты.

Это был прекрасный вечер. У них были лучшие места, и представление было даже лучше, чем они ожидали. Сми­ты были в таком хорошем расположении духа, что после того, как мюзикл закончился, они решили поужинать в своем любимом итальянском ресторане. Когда они, нако­нец, добрались домой, их ждал новый шок. Пока они были в театре, кто-то пробрался в их дом и унес все ценные вещи. На столе лежала записка. Едва они взглянули на нее, как поняли, кто ограбил их квартиру, потому что этот почерк они уже видели раньше. «Надеюсь, вам понравилось пред­ставление!» –говорилось в записке.
