C) After certain verbs expressing order, suggestions, requests & some others & the nouns formed from them

To recommend
To insist that sb should do sth
To propose
To order
To demand, etc
E.g. I recommend that you should ignore the child’s whims.
The doctor insisted that she should stay in bed for a few days.
He proposed that we should delay the decision until the next morning.
The order was that we should stay behind & wait till he joined us.
D) Amusement/surprise
As I left the house, who should come to see me but my old friend Malcolm!
At that point what should happen but the car wouldn’t start!
The door opened & who should stand before me but Rick!
E) (infml/hum/iron.) Expression of the opposite meaning = oughtn’t/needn’t
With all his money he should worry about a little thing like $ 5!
F) Set phrases
E.g. (To think) that it should come to this!
(To think) that it should have happened to me!
I should think so! So I should think! (Ещё бы! Конечно!)
We all went to a disco, but Granny didn’t join us. - I should think not!
Also before certain verbs (imagine, think, say, hope)
I should imagine we’ll be home for dinner.
I should think it gets quite cold here at night.
OUGHT TO
( is similar to should; but ought to is slightly stronger in BrE. In AE there is no significant difference in force or sense, & any differences in usage are dialectal)
1. To have the moral duty to do sth (=should), advice/advisability/desirability
She ought to look after her children better.
You ought to be ashamed of yourself.
We really ought to buy a new car, oughtn’t we? He ought to be punished, oughtn’t he?
2. Criticism, reproach, an unfulfilled obligation in the past (+ Perfect Infinitive )(=should)
The old coat ought to have been thrown away years ago.
Shows that some action would be right or sensible.
Oughtn’t he to see a doctor?
Coffee ought to be drunk while it’s hot.
Your brother ought to have chosen medicine as a career.
4. Supposition implying probability, likelihood of a desirable event. Sth that can be naturally expected. Whatever is predicted should be a pleasant idea. )(=should)
Prices ought to come down soon
He ought to know it (Уж он-то должен это знать)
They ought to win easily. You ought to be hungry by now.
