Lesson A

Good evening, ladies and gentleman...

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the course. My name’s Carol Owen and I’m in charge of the general organisation of the course, so if... if any of you have any suggestions or... any complaints - though I hope you won’t have any of those – please come to me and I’ll... take care of them. There are just one or two things I’d like to draw your attention to in the course programme - you should all have a copy of the programme waiting for you when you book in at the reception desk, by the way, but I know some of you haven’t yet had the chance to read them, so here goes...

The course, as you know, begins at 9.15 tomorrow morning, and every morning there’ll be three sessions lasting an hour each, with a fifteen-minute break in between... that’s to say, the first session runs from 9.15 to 10.15, the second from 10.30 to 11.30, and the third from a quarter-to-twelve till a quarter-to-one. Then after lunch there are the practical sessions, which last two hours, starting at 2.30 and ending at 4.30. Could we ask you in advance, please, to be punctual in arriving for the sessions, even if you are having a fascinating conversation with someone over coffee, because as I know you appreciate, it is disturbing for everyone if people enter late.

Meal times? Well, we know some of you will probably get so enthusiastic about the sessions that... you may forget to eat... but for those of you who do remember to eat, breakfast is from 8 to 9, lunch from 1 to 2, and dinner from 6.30 to 8, there is afternoon tea and biscuits for those who want it at 4.30.

As for the social programme, there are just one or two things I should mention! There are two main evening trips, on Tuesday and Thursday. The Thursday one, to Oxford, leaves at five o’clock, after tea, and includes a guided tour of the colleges and, after that, dinner in a famous pub... that trip is as planned. But I’m afraid we have to change the trip to Stratford, which was scheduled for Tuesday, because simply we have not been able to get enough tickets for the evening performance. We’re sorry about that but it seems “Hamlet” is a bit too popular...However, instead of that we’ve organised an alternative trip, to the National Theatre in London - you won’t see “Hamlet”, you’ll see “Romeo and Juliet” instead. It’s good to see there are some romantics among you! And there’ll be time for dinner after the performance. Sorry for the change, but we hope you’ll enjoy London.

Before I hand over to Alan here... a couple of things about the centre’s facilities, if you haven’t seen them already. In the building there’s a student bar with billiards and chess-boards and cards and so on; there’s a music-room, a TV room, a library, a computer centre, in fact if you name it I think we’ve got it. And in the grounds we have six tennis courts, a swimming-pool, squash courts... plenty of space for jogging or cycling... and stables, if any of you like riding. That’s about all from me... please remember, though, if you need anything you only have to ask me... so I’ll hand over now to Alan.
