1.1. In the sentences below, decide if the verb underlined refers to the present (P), the future (F), or to something habitual (H).

1. Joe wants to be a pilot when he grows up.

2. We always go abroad for our holidays.

1.2. Complete these sentences using the correct form of the verb in brackets.

In small groups tell each other how often you do the following things, e.g. I always walk to university. I often walk to university when the weather’s nice. I very rarely walk to university.

In pairs, think of three questions to ask each other about these things, beginning How often do you …?, e.g. A: How often do you eat spaghetti? – B: About twice a month.

You may use the following ideas:

fly write a letter argue do the dishes

go to a concert / play laugh get a haircut sing

Answer these questions using every, e.g. How often do you go out? – I go out every two or three days.

1.4. In pairs, ask and answer questions, using this table to help.

1.5. In pairs, match a verb from the first column with a word from the second to make a phrase.

Use the phrases to ask you partner questions. Give short answers, e.g. Do you eat meat? – Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.

1.6. REGULAR EVENTS

In pairs, ask and answer questions about the activities suggested in Table 2, using the frequency expressions given in Table 1. Start your questions with How often do you …?

1.8. Think of a film or book you really enjoyed. Spend a few minutes refreshing your memory and making some notes. Tell the group all about it, but don’t mention the title. See if anyone can guess from your description.
