All the forms of the Oblique Mood can be used in simple sentences:

 

Subjunctive I in the set expressions of wish: Success attend you! Long live the queen! Long live the Royal fleet! Long live democracy! Be yours a happy choice! (Пусть твой выбор будет удачным!) These forms have become mottoes and some of them sound archaic.

Far it be from me to interfere! Far it be from me to prosecute you! (Я вовсе не собираюсь возбуждать против вас дело!)

Some set phrases are based on Christian church expressions: God bless my life! God bless my heart and soul! Bless me/you! God be with you!(Господи, боже! Господи, помилуй! Ей богу! Видит бог!) Heaven forbid! (Упаси, боже!)

Theare also imprecations, scolding expression, curse, oarth, swearwords of annoyance, distrust and surprise: Damn it all! Hang you! (К черту!), Hang your ideas! Confound it! Confound your money! Damn you! Devil take him!

In the expressions of wish and at the same time concession (уступки) Be it so! So be it! Be it as you wish! (Пусть будет по-твоему!) Be it as it may! (Как бы то ни было.) Happen what may! Come what will! (Что будет, то и будет)

Subjunctive I in special questions, expressing emotions: Why talk so loudly! Why not see for yourself! (Почему бы тебе не разобраться самому?)

 

Subjunctive II in simple sentences

a) in exclamatory sentences beginning with if, if only, oh if, oh that: If she were here! If only he were a bit wiser! Oh, if I had such a friend! If only they came tomorrow!

b) In questions beginning with what if: What if she were a crook! (А что если она просто мошенница?) What if the boy had been kidnapped?

c) In the construction as if were (так сказать, если можно так выразиться): He is not of our kind, as it were.

In the constructions had better, had rather, had sooner, expressing advice wish, choice: You`d better see the doctor. I had rather go to bed now. We had sooner not interfere.

Subjunctive III is used in rhetoric questions, exclamations, expressing emotions: annoyance, disappointment, surprise, reproach, reprimand: Why should I know? Why should he be hanging about here? (С чего это он тут слоняется?) Why should you help him?

Subjunctive IV is used in simple sentences in the following constructions:

1. should like/hope/think/advice: I`d like to see you. I should advise you to think the matter over.

2. in your place, but for: I should do nothing now. But for the rain they would be here now.

The Present Conditional Mood is used with reference to the present or future:

I think it would be very unwise to marry her. She would be a load on you.

When the situation refers to the past, the Past Conditional Mood is used: Twenty years ago I would have strongly disapproved of you. He would have said a great deal more, but he was tired. She`s a different woman now. I should never have thought it possible.
