MY SPECIALITY

We are students of the Byelorussian State Economic University. There are many departments at our University - Economic Departments of Accounting, Management, Accounting & Statistics, Banking, Foreign Relations, Commerce & Finance. We study at the Department of Finance and are trained to be specialists for different branches of our economy.

After graduating from the University most of my fellow-students are going to work as financial managers, because we're sure that one of the primary considerations when going into business is money. Without sufficient funds no company can begin operations, and how this company obtains and uses money will determine its success. This process is within competence of a financial manager. The main task and goal of any financial manager in a profit-seeking organizations Is to maximize the owners' wealth through effective financial plan­ning & analysis, asset management, and of financial capital. These same financial management functions must be performed by financial managers in non-for-profit organizations, such as governmental units or hospitals, in order to provide the desired level of service at acceptable costs.

At the University we study a lot of subjects: banking, mathematics, foreign languages, philosophy & others. We are to master all of them to be experts in our specific field, which is broad and dynamic. It directly affects the lives of every person and every institution, financial and non-financial, private or public, large or small, profit-seeking or non-for-profit. Finance can be defined as the art and science of managing money, and is concerned with the process, Institutions, markets, and instruments involved in the transfer of money among and between individuals, businesses and governments. It can also be defined at both the aggregate or macrolevel and the firm or microlevel. Finance at the macrolevel is the study of financial institutions and financial markets and how they operate within the financial system. Finance at the microlevel is the study of financial planning, asset management & fund raising for business firms & financial institutions. Financial markets, institutions or intermediaries and business financial management are basic elements of well-developed financial systems. I hope, such a system will be established in our country with the help of us - financial managers of a new type.

Of course, we are all dreaming of a bright and serious career. As far as we guess, our career opportunities in finance are genera­lly found in four areas. First is the area which I am interested in, of business financial management. Langer firms involved in the pro­duction of goods and services usually employ 1) a treasurer who is responsible for managing the firm's cash, acquiring and managing the firm's assets, and selling stocks and bonds to raise the finan­cial capital acessary to conduct the firm's business; and 2) a con­troller who is responsible for cost accounting, financial accounting, and tax recordkeeping activities.

A second opportunity lies in the area of financial institutions or intermediaries.

A third area is the securities markets field.

A fourth^ area involves possible positions in government or non - for - profit organizations. Finance opportunities at the state government level include the management of cash funds, asset acqui­sition decisions and obtaining borrowed funds, Non-for-profit orga­nizations also need expert financial managers to manage assets, con­trol costs, and obtain funds to meet the organization's sevice objections.

At present we try to cope with our most urgent task - to study well, so that we could choose and make our own future.
