Ex.10 Read the dialogue. Tell the difference between ‘ ache ’ and ‘ pain’.

Teacher: Patients are not used to talking about their body functions and abnormalities. Very often they cannot easily find the precise words to describe the character of their pain and the kind of cough they have, and so on. Today we’ll talk about pain. The words ‘ pain’ and ‘ ache’ mean the same thing.

Student: If ‘ pain’ and ‘ ache ’ mean the same thing, then we may ask our patient if he has an ache in his shoulder, for example. It’s correct, isn’t it?

Teacher: No, you are mistaken. The thing is that both of these words are nouns but the word ‘ache can be used only with the following words to form a compound noun: backache, headache, earache, stomachache, toothache. For the other parts of the body we say: ‘ I have a pain in my shoulder, chest’, etc.

Student: Is it possible to have pain in the back or in the head?

Teacher: Yes, it is possible to have pain in the back, head and stomach but this generally refers to a more serious condition than backache, headache and stomachache.

Student: Can we use the word ‘ ache’ as a verb? Is it possible to say ‘ My tooth is aching ”?

Teacher: Quite so. The word ‘ ache’ can also be used as a verb. And the patient may say: ‘ My leg aches after much walking ’, or ‘ My back aches after gardening’.

Student: And what about the word ‘ hurt’? My patient told me: ‘ My chest hurts when I cough’.

Teacher: The word ‘ hurt ’ is another verb used to express injury and pain. So it’s absolutely correct when patients describe their complaints as: ‘ My chest hurts when I cough’ or ‘ My neck hurts when I turn my head’. It means that coughing causes pain in the chest.

Linda: You look rather pale, Maria. Are you ill?

Maria: I hope not. But as a matter of fact, I have a headache and I am a little shaky in my legs.

Linda: Did you take your temperature?

Maria: I did and I found that I had a slight fever.

Linda: Let me have a look at your tongue and feel your pulse. First show me your tongue. It is coated and your pulse is rapid and irregular. Besides, you have a sore throat.

Maria: Oh, yes, I see – that’s why I’m feeling unwell.

Linda: I fear you have caught a bad flu. You’d better see a doctor.

HOW I GOT MY CERTIFICATE OF HEALTH

Before I entered the University I got my certificate of health. The doctors including a therapeutist, a neurologist and others had to listen to my heart and lungs, to feel my pulse, to check my kidneys, stomach, eyesight and hearing. They also had to make my blood analysis, take my blood pressure and X-ray me too.

I had an appointment with our district doctor for 10 o’clock. She has consulting hours from 8 till 12. When I entered the consulting room a nurse asked me to take my temperature. My temperature was 36,6 degrees. Then the doctor asked me to strip to the waist and listened to my lungs and heart. She also felt my pulse and took my blood pressure. They were normal. Then I lay down on the couch and she palpated my abdomen.

After the physical examination the therapeutist began to fill in my patient’s card. She wrote down that I had suffered measles, chicken-pox and scarlet fever in my childhood. I said that in general, I was a healthy person and had no problem with my health.

So after the examination I went to an X – ray room. The doctor X-rayed my chest. The results were normal. The doctor revealed no lung and heart troubles. In the laboratory the nurse took some blood from my finger for blood analysis. When it was ready it revealed normal findings. The next day I got my certificate of health. I was healthy and could enter the University.
