Options

1Send some patients to Boston for urgently needed operations and post-operative care.

Cost: approximately $200,000-$250,000 per patient

2 Hire a research assistant to investigate the causes of cot deaths (unexpected deaths of young children in their sleep). The death rate of children from this cause is high in the local community.

Cost: approximately $300,000 for five years

3 Build new facilities for physiotherapy. Hire new staff to work in the rooms.

Cost: approximately $1 million (at least)

4 Buy new equipment: an up-to-date MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner.

Cost: at least $600,000

5 Upgrade the facilities and accommodation at the hospital: the hospital needs to be redecorated and the fittings and furniture renovated.

6 Invest in a new facility: set up a cosmetic surgery clinic run by the hospital's gifted surgeon, Mr Mack. This will bring in a lot of money from wealthy American and European clients.

Cost: approximately $700,000

7 Erect a bronze statue of Edgar Dowling (who died two years ago) in the hospital grounds.

Cost: $150,000, but $50,000 already raised from public donations
