But Julia Roberts appeared to have topped the lot yesterday – by marrying at midnight in her own specially-built chapel.

Her secret wedding had been scheduled for early evening on Wednesday at her 50-acre ranch in New Mexico.

But a torrential storm which brought thunder and heavy rain over her estate in Taos delayed the ceremony for hours.

The Oscar-winning actress even­tually exchanged vows with cam­eraman Danny Moder in the first few minutes of yesterday in front of family and friends, her publicist Marcy Engelman confirmed yesterday.

Miss Roberts, 34, had already ensured total privacy by having the wooden chapel erected at her ranch six weeks ago.

She and Mr Moder then tried to damp down specula­tion by disguising their wedding as a 'garden party'.

Instead of traditional wedding gifts, guests were asked to each donate a plant for the garden.

The guests were flown from Los Angeles to New Mexico in a private jet hired by Miss Roberts, whose previous marriage to country and western singer Lyle Lovett ended in divorce after two years.

The invitation asked guests to: 'Come celebrate our Independence Day on the green grass under the stars with the dogs and the horses.' They were asked to dress in a 'wild west Bohemian' style and 'free your­self from black'.

Last night, the couple hosted a reception for 50 friends and family. Among the stars invited were George Clooney and Bruce Willis.

The actress, whose films include Erin Brockovich, Pretty Woman and Notting Hill, met her new husband on the set of the film The Mexican, in which she starred with Brad Pitt.

Moder, 33, dumped his wife of five years to be with Miss Roberts – who had been in a relationship with Amer­ican actor Benjamin Bratt. Make-up artist Vera Steinberg was devastated by Moder's betrayal and tried to make him wait for a divorce. Miss Roberts is alleged to have paid Miss Steinberg £150,000 to hurry things along and the divorce was finalised last month.

The star recently appeared to make a cheap dig at her rival, letting a photographer take pictures of her in a home-made T-shirt saying 'A Low Vera'. The stunt won her few friends – especially in Moder's family, who remain loyal to his ex-wife.

His father, film producer Mike Moder – whose films have included Crimson Tide and Beverly Hills Cop – later appeared to give his blessing to his son's new relationship, saying: 'This could go all the way. They're soul mates and they're really tight.'

Miss Roberts has been accused of playing out her Runaway Bride film role in real life after walking out on a series of relationships.

She left Kiefer Sutherland three days before their wedding in 1991 and ran off with Jason Patric. She has also been engaged to Dylan McDermott and Liam Neeson.
