Exercise 1. Match the following words. More than one variant is possible. Use the phrases in the sentences of your own.

Example: evidence/witness – witness’s evidence

Witness, advocate, defendant, procurator, plaintiff, judge, jury, public prosecutor, crier of court, victim, bailiff, clerk.

Evidence, advice, damning verdict, suit, petition, application, accusation, concluding remarks, bill of particulars, deliberation, speech, question, court action, legal action.

 

Exercise 2. Complete the sentences. Sometimes you need –’s/’, and sometimes of ….

Example: Do you trust … (witnesses/testimony)? – Do you trust the witnesses’ testimony?

1. A forger made illegal … (copies/paintings). 2. What is … (the name/the criminal)? 3. When is … (the date/the trial)? 4. They didn’t obey … (orders/a policeman)? 5. Write … (the name/the suspect) … at (the top/the page). 6. What is … (the address/Prime Minister)? 7. What was … (the cause/the accident)? 8. … is near the city centre (the building/the court). 9. … is very good (the spoken English/the solicitor). 10. John refused to go to … (the scene/the crime). 11. … is very interesting (the job/the advocate). 12. The police car stopped at … (the end/the street).

Exercise 3. Use a phrase with –’s/’ or a compound noun.

Example: The Office of the Prosecutor was established in our country in May 1922. The Prosecutor’s Office was established in our country in May 1922.

1. The car of robbers was hidden behind the bank. 2. Where’s the office of the barrister? 3. The keyboard of the computer was damaged during the fire. 4. She is a secretary of our director. 5. The detective spoke to the manager of the company. 6. The officers from the customs arrested George for smuggling. 7. The critic of the reform was wrong. 8. As it was the first offence of Ben he was let off with only a warning. 9. The bank at the end of the street was held up by masked men. 10. That’s the witness for the defence. 11. The gate of the factory is shut. 12. It was the reign of Queen Elizabeth.

Exercise 4. Tom and Ben are drug dealers. Look what Tom and Ben have got and then answer the questions.

Tom: a big gun, drugs, a black hat, a big bag, boots, a gas bomb, brown gloves.

Ben: sunglasses, a sharp knife, patrons, a small pistol, a black umbrella, a motorcycle.

Example: Whose are the brown gloves? – The brown gloves are Tom’s.

1. Whose is the big gun? 2. Whose are sunglasses? 3. Whose is the motorcycle? 4. Whose is the black hat? 5. Whose is the sharp knife? 6. Whose are the boots? 7. Whose is the black umbrella? 8. Whose is the big bag? 9. Whose are the patrons? 10. Whose is the small pistol? 11. Whose are drugs? 12. Whose is the gas bomb?

 

Exercise 5. Replace the of-phrases by the possessive case where possible.

Example: After a week of rest we resumed our work on this case. – After a week’s rest we resumed our work on this case.

1. Burglars climbed onto the roof of the house and broke into the house. 2. The university is at a distance of two miles from the Town Hall. 3. The punishment of young offenders requires great patience and self-possession. 4. How great is the population of our country now? 5. What is the height of the criminal? 6. The audience was rather tired after the speech of the advocate. 7. There was a heap of books under the table of an attorney. 8. The tides of the ocean are caused by the movement of the Moon. 9. Corporal punishment of children has long been prohibited in schools. 10. We examined the places of interest of London which are near Trafalgar square. 11. The order of the commander-in-chief was announced on the radio. 12. Who was the discoverer of the ancient Greek city of Troy in the 19th century?

Exercise 6. Translate the sentences from Russian into English.

1. «Закон и порядок» – название наиболее известного журнала о состоянии преступности. 2. Когда полицейские приехали в дом Браунов, подозреваемый уже был там. 3. Ты слушал речь министра образования о новой реформе? 4. Родители Джима не позволили ему пойти на демонстрацию. 5. Это не мои слова, а бывшего премьер-министра Англии Маргарет Тэтчер. 6. Каково население самого крупного города в стране? 7. Выступление президента Банка Англии было очень коротким. 8. Дом, в котором произошло преступление, находится отсюда в двух шагах. 9. Отношение многих американцев к легализации наркотиков отрицательное. 10. Причины серьезных преступлений несовершеннолетних преступников весьма разнообразны. 11. Программа правительства по предотвращению преступлений начнет работать уже в следующем году. 12. Предсказания экспертов о последствиях теракта противоречат данным полиции.
