Exercise 3

Question 1: Layers of Software

Give the definitions to all layers of software. Be specific and concrete!

You can use the material from iCarnegie.

BUT if you take the definitions from there, you MUST REPHRASE them!

User-Written Scripts – It’s a software that you can install it on your browser, to change the look and the behavior of a website.
User Interface - With user interface, user could navigate on site, like buttons.
Application – Program that user can run in his computer, to do his work.
Run-time Library - Is a collection of software programs used at program run time to provide one or more native program functions or services.
Application Program Interface - A specification intended to be used as an interface by software components to communicate with each other.
Operating System – The master software that is run on a computer or smartphone that allows it to run other applications developed for that platform.
Kernel - Using interposes communication and system calls, it acts as a bridge between applications and the data processing performed at the hardware level.
Device Drivers - Designed to enable interaction with hardware devices. Without the required device driver, the corresponding hardware device can’t work.
BIOS – It’s the program a personal computer's microprocessor uses to get the computer system started after you turn it on. It also manages data flow between the computer's operating system and attached devices such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, mouse, and printer.
Hardware – it’s a device of the computer, that you can physically touch, and it’s connected to the computer.

 

Question 2: Troubleshooting

Below are various problem scenarios. Select the most likely cause(s) for the problem from the Causes list.

Causes
A. Component not plugged in
B. Application software error
C. Operating system error
D. Low RAM
E. Slow processor
F. CMOS battery failure
G. Motherboard failure
H. Hard disk failure
I. BIOS ROM failure
J. Appropriate component driver not installed properly

Problems
a. Program not responding
Causes: 1) Be correctly sure that the hardware is rightly connected to the port, after connection have to be sign on the screen. 2) Turn off and on the computer and try again. 3) Make a sure that cable is not damaged, try to use other cables.

b. Screen froze after successfully booting
Causes: 1) Press buttons(ctrl alt del) and click task manager. Then remove the problem and try booting again. 2) Turn off and on the computer and try booting again.

c. Programs running slowly
Causes: Try to clean up your computer from different software’s like hard games and movies. The problem can be in low memory and overloaded video card.

d. Peripheral device not working (mouse, keyboard, printer)
Causes: Change the size of virtual memory. Windows automatically attempts to increase the paging file size the first time your computer becomes low on memory, but you can also manually increase it up to a maximum size that is determined by the amount of RAM installed.

e. All necessary computer system components are plugged in, but the system does not boot
Causes: 1)

f. The computer is being booted, and an error message indicates that the hard drive cannot be found.
Causes: 1)

g. If low memory is a cause of the system running slowly, what can you do as a user to speed up the system? 1)
