Research goal: Singling out the key factors which reinforce the impact of speech.

You will see 19 speech statements concerning sociopolitical issues. Below each statement there is a 5-point scale with the following categories: absolutely unconvincing, unconvincing, cannot say, convincing, absolutely convincing.

Please choose one of the categories according to what extent they seem convincing to you and select it using black color font.

1.

«What would be needed were fellow citizens who were willing to do their part - through protests and struggle, on the streets, through a civil war and civil disobedience - to narrow that gap between the promise of our ideals and the reality of their time.»

2.

«Tomorrow you can put an end to the politics that would divide a nation just to win an election; that asks us to fear at a time when we need to hope.»

3.

«In the face of that young student who sleeps just three hours before working the night shift, I think about my mom, who raised my sister and me on her own while she worked and earned her degree; who once turned to food stamps but was still able to send us to the best schools in the country with the help of student loans and scholarships.

And when I hear a woman talk about the difficulties of starting her own business, I think about my grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle-management, decades being passed over for promotions. She's the one who taught me about hard work. She poured everything she had into me.

I don't know what kind of lives my opponent thinks that celebrities lead, but this has been mine.»

4.

«And I must say this: we remain deeply impressed and inspired by the resilience, the courage, and the determination of your people to build a free, democratic and prosperous future, whatever obstacles lie in your path.

As I said, Mr. President, almost exactly a year ago, I was here in your Parliament to witness you take the oath of office, to “protect the sovereignty and independence of this country.”

So, you should know the world supports you.»

5.

«We are more compassionate than a government that lets veterans sleep on our streets and families slide into poverty; that sits on its hands while our major city drowns before our eyes.»

absolutely unconvincing unconvincing cannot say convincing absolutely convincing

6.

«Our government should invest in new schools and new roads and new science and technology.

Our government should work for us. It should help us. It should ensure opportunity for every citizen who is willing to work.»

7.

«Over the last eight years their foreign policy has squandered the legacy that generations of our men have built. They proposed hundreds of billions in tax breaks for big corporations. Gave more and more to those with the most and hoped that prosperity trickled down to everyone else.

You have shown what history teaches us - that at defining moments like this one, the change is badly needed. Change happens because our people demand it - and they rise up together and insist on new ideas, leadership and politics. People of every creed and color, from every walk of life should see with clear vision that our destiny is inextricably linked. Our dreams can come true only if we are as one and march ahead.

With so much work to be done; so many children to educate and veterans to care for, with cities to rebuild, an economy to fix and and farms to save. We cannot turn back.»

8.

«That's the strength of our state - the idea that we are responsible for the others, that we also act as one nation. The fundamental belief that I am my brother's keeper».

9.

«I don’t claim to be a perfect leader. But I am your public servant, standing here, wanting to make our country so much better – for all our children. I love this country, and I will do my duty by it. We have got the track record, the right team.»

10.

«I started out just a mother fighting for the life of her child. Along the way I learned how unfair our state can be today, for people who have HIV, as well as for many, many others. I am a well-to-do woman. But I have learned my lesson the hard way, and I know that our country has lost its path and is at risk of losing her soul. Fellow countrymen, we are all in a struggle.»

11.

«And fellow citizens, I say to you tonight: We’ve more work to do for the workers I met in different places, who are losing their union jobs at the Faywag plant that’s moving to the neigbouring state, and now are having to compete with their own children for jobs that pay seven bucks an hour; more to do for the father that I met who was losing his job and choking back the tears, wondering how he would pay 4500 a month for the drugs his son needs without the health benefits that he counted on; more to do for the young woman in the eastern region, and thousands more like her, who has the grades, the drive and the will.

The people I meet in cities, in diners and office parks - they expect government to open up opportunities for everyone.»

12.

«By taking on everyone who gets in the way of high standards we will make sure your children get a great education. Accepting we all have to work a bit longer and save a bit more, for those retiring, we will make sure you get a decent pension; and real rewards for a life of work….»

13.

«They were the people who left our country with the biggest peacetime deficit in history…who gave us the deepest recession since the war…who destroyed our pensions system, bust our banking system…who left a million young people out of work, abandoned five million on out-of-work benefits – and increased the debt by hundreds of billions.

And five years on, they still want to spend and borrow more. It is the same old party, and you know what? Madness is voting for this high spending, deficit ballooning shower and expecting anything other than economic disaster.

Over the next five years we will deliver the following things: establish 3 million Apprenticeships. The most competitive corporate taxes in the G20. Eliminating the budget deficit through spending cuts.»

14.

«There’s one more task I want to carry out. We will bring fairness to our constitution. During that referendum campaign we made a vow to the people who took to the streets longing for getting more powers – and we will keep that vow. I know that you are asking why they can vote separately on things like tax, spending and welfare. I know you want this answered. So this is my vow: I will offer a chance for every large region to vote for their own laws – we, the leading party, will deliver it because I know the system is unfair.»

15.

«We are acting in partnership with a range of countries – including those from the region. Because let’s be clear: There is no “cut and run” option. We must deal with ISIL. As always with this Party, we will do whatever it takes to keep our country safe.»

absolutely unconvincing unconvincing cannot say convincing absolutely convincing

16.

«The difference the Act makes, is that it provides a framework so the measures we take are consistent with the values we are defending.

It does mean that, because of this Act, we have the scales on which we can weigh our decisions - balancing the arguments. And any decisions we make as a Government can be tested against an objective standard.»

17.

«It’s working, despite the difficult circumstances we have all endured over the last few years, including a recession in 2008 - the worst global financial crisis, and the devastating series of earthquakes that hit and destroyed whole parts of one of our provinces.

I know it’s been a difficult time for us recently.

Difficult times are when sound, stable and responsible government matters more than ever.

Faced with challenges, our Government set about dealing with them in a measured and balanced way.

The results are already starting to show.

We managed to support our people through the period. And the economy has grown in eight of the nine quarters. The interest rates have reached 45 year lows.»

18.

«And with true political will and an effective plan, we can get our country on the right track, grow the economy, protect the environment, provide energy security for generations to come and become a positive global player on climate change.»

19.

«A future Government will raise the tax-free personal allowance. That will take 1 million more of the lowest paid workers out of income tax – and will give a tax cut to many more. So with us, if you work 30 hours a week on minimum wage, you will pay no income tax at all. Nothing. Zilch.»
