Let me introduce myself. My name is …. I am a … (captain, senior lieutenant etc)of police and I study part-time at the extramural faculty of Saint-Petersburg university of the Ministry of the Interior of the Russian Federation.

To become a law enforcement expert of high professional standards students must get good knowledge of such subjects and sciences as: general police administration, constitutional law, criminal law, the history of state and law, criminal procedure, civil law, foreign languages and many others. I study English language, and now I’ll speak about the USA

The USA is a parliamentary republic consisting of 50 states and the District of Columbia (DC), a special federal area where the capital of the country, Washington, is situated. The United States government is based on the principle of federalism, in which power is shared between the federal government and state governments.

The colours of the US national flag – stars and stripes – are red, white and blue.

Thirteen stripes represent the first 13 states of the United States and 50 stars the current number of states.

The Government is divided into three branches: legislative (the US Congress)

executive (the President and his Administration) and judicial (the US Court System). The Republican and Democratic parties dominate in the political life of the USA.

The executive power in the federal government is vested in the President of the United States and the Cabinet members to whom the President's powers are delegated.

The US President is elected for a four-year term. Presidential elections are held every leap-year in November. President is limited to a maximum of two four-year terms.

On Inauguration day (20th January) the new President is sworn to preserve and protect the Constitution and defend Americans' interests all over the world.

The President is assisted by the Cabinet – Secretaries who are at the head of the executive departments. The residence of the President is the famous White House.

The seat of the legislative branch of the national Government is the Capitol. The US Congress is composed of two Houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
