Иберийские волки
В приведенной выше таблице не упомянуты два европейский подвида волка: италийский волк (Canis lupus italicus) и иберийский волк (Canis lupus signatus) соответственно. Волки Апеннинского и Пиренейского полуостровов отличаются от населяющих остальную Европу евразийских волков некоторыми особенностями внешности и поэтому выделяются рядом исследователей в самостоятельные подвиды.[61][62][63]
Недавнее генетическое исследование показало, что все волки Апеннинского полуострова действительно представляют собой единую по происхождению группу. Также у волков Апеннинского полуострова обнаружились уникальные по сравнению с другими популяциями волка особенности митохондриальной ДНК, а некоторые встречающиеся у других европейских волков аллели у аппенинских волков отсутствуют.[64]
Недавнее исследование показало, что обитающие на Индийском субконтиненте популяции индийского волка могут относиться к отдельному биологическому виду. Аналогичные же результаты были получены и для части популяций тибетского волка (Canis lupus chanco), которые могут быть выделены в отдельный биологический вид (а не подвид) «гималайский волк» (Canis himalayensis).[65]
