Course summary

Current Issues in Asian Studies will look at both the theoretical and practical sides of contemporary dimensions in the Middle East and the Far East.

Course objectives

Current Issues in Asian Studies has the following objectives: to nurture critical analysis when using available texts and materials with regard to academic and non-academic terms; to learn the method of research, analysis, collation and presentation necessary to present a topic; to familiarize students with the major elements of the Asian regions so each can perceive where and how the chosen language/culture area is similar and dissimilar to the others; to engage in deeper team study of a specific topic in the chosen language/cultural area, using the research methods.

Student learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this course the student will be able to:

· Know/ understand how to read a text analytically; how to discern tie-ins from one specific region to the wider area of Asian Studies; how to respect variant perspectives

· Analyze/interpret texts and events using language skills, dialogue method of cultural awareness and other sociological techniques

· Apply skills to work with a team and present a specific topic clearly and interestingly
