A.V. Unit 2 Travel

Travel nouns:

1. travel (uncount.) - the general term to describe going from one place to another

travels - time spent travelling, especially in foreign countries and for pleasure

*The novel is based on his travels in India.

2. journey - one single piece of travel: the distance covered when travelling from one place to another. Journey can refer to a long distance or to a short regular one.

*How long did your journey take? *How long is your journey to work? Just about 20 minutes.

*a long and difficult journey across the mountains

3. trip - going to another place (often for a short period of time) and usually back again, for a purpose, business or pleasure. Usually involves more than one single journey.

*day trip, round trip, business trip, a five-minute trip by taxi

Trip or journey?

• a trip usually involves you going to a place and back again; a journey is usually one-way
• a trip is often shorter than a journey, although it does not have to be:

* a trip to New York * a round-the-world trip

• it is often short in time, even if it is long in distance
• journey is more often used when the travelling takes a long time and is difficult
• in AmE journey is not used for short trips:

*(BrE) What is your journey to work like?

4. tour /tʊə/ (of/round/around sth) - a journey made for pleasure during which several different places/ towns/countries, etc. are visited

package tour - a holiday that is organised by a company at a fixed price and that includes the cost of travel, hotels, etc.

5. voyage /ˈvɔɪɪdʒ/- a long journey, not necessarily for pleasure, by sea or in space

*The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage (=first journey).

6. cruise /kruːz/ - a journey by sea, visiting different places, especially as a holiday/vacation

*I'd love to go on a round-the-world cruise. *a luxury cruise ship

7. outing - a short trip made for pleasure or education, usually with a group of people and lasting no more than a day

*The children were on a day's outing from school.

8. hike - a long walk in the country

9. camping - living in a tent on holiday/vacation

*Do you go camping?

10.expedition - an organised journey with a particular purpose, especially to find out about a place that is not well known

*to plan/lead/go on an expedition to the North Pole

11. be on / go on a trip/ journey / tour/cruise

14.accommodation (uncount.) - a place to live, work or stay in

*Hotel accommodation is included in the price of your holiday.

15.to argue - to give reasons why you think that sth is right/wrong, true/not true, etc, especially to persuade people that you are right

*He was too tired to argue the point (=discuss the matter).

*He argued that they needed more time to finish the project.

23.common /ˈkɒmən/ - happening often; existing in large numbers or in many places
