Infinitives are used…

1. … after certain verbs.

What are you planning to do?

We can’t afford to go out very often.

2. …after certain adjectives.

I find it difficult to make new friends.

 

-ing or infinitive?

With some verbs there is change in meaning.

It started raining/to rain.

With some verbs there is change in meaning.

I tried to put out the fire. (This was my objective.)

I tried pouring water on it. (This was my method.)
