Syntactic functions of non-finite forms of the verb

Infinitive phrases

Infinitive phrases consist of a question word and an infinitive.

How/ when/ why/ where to do What/ whom/ which to take whether to do
How to get across was the problem. (S) The problem was how to get across. (P) I don’t knowhow to get across. (O) They discussed the question of who to invite. (Attr.) She explained which book to use. We hesitated whether to go or not. (O)

Predicative complexes with non-finite forms of the verb

PC consists of a nominal part and a non-finite form with predicative relations between them.

Predicative relations are relations between a subject and a predicate in the sentence.

Would like, hate, prefer, expect, know, believe, allow, order We are waiting for you to come.He arranged for me to stayat a hotel. We are anxious (= want) for you to succeed.We appealed for the case to be investigated. Mean, long (= want) I can’t stand his telling the stories again and again. I'm looking forward to your coming back. We saw him talkingto somebody. See, hear, feel, leave, find, catch, keep, have We found the window broken. attribute         There's nobody for him to play with. I have no hope of his coming back.        
adverbial modifier         The box is too heavy for me to lift.(result) I’ve told you about it for you to knowthe truth. (purpose) After his coming back we started discussing our further steps. (time We left without his noticing it.(attend circumstances) With him talking to somebody, we had to wait. (reason) It being warm and sunny, we were having a good time on the beach. (attend circumstances) The window broken, it was cold in the room. (reason)
