Aim

History plays an important part in education. It is our aim, that through a knowledge of the past our pupils develop an awareness of the world in which they live and an understanding of the way in which people and society have interacted.

Approach

As it is the past that helps children make sense of the world in which they live, our pupils are taught about important events and developments in British and foreign history as well as being introduced to the world of ancient civilisations. We believe that it is important for our pupils to have a good understanding of chronology, historical concepts and vocabulary and, whilst facts are important, our pupils are also encouraged to make their own interpretations of the past based on a variety of sources and evidence. This includes use of contemporary writing, paintings, photographs, documents and historical reconstructions and re-enactments.

Curriculum: Geography

‘Geography provokes and answers questions about the natural and human worlds, using different scales of enquiry to view them from different perspectives. It develops knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, an understanding of maps, and a range of investigative and problem-solving skills both inside and outside the classroom.’ (Curriculum 2000 Geography)

Aim

The Geography department aims to stimulate a sense of enquiry, which along with important geographical skills, will allow pupils to develop knowledge of places, an awareness of patterns and processes, and an understanding of environmental change and sustainable development.

Approach

The department uses the National Curriculum, Key Stage 2 as a starting point; however, schemes of work develop ideas and tasks that exceed the statutory requirements. Varied teaching methods stimulate children’s interest in both their surroundings and in the variety of human and physical conditions on the Earth’s surface and our teaching fosters in our pupils a sense of wonder at the beauty of the world around them.

We are also passionate about helping our children develop an informed concern about the quality of the environment and the future of the human habitat, as it is through an understanding of these issues that our children will grow in their sense of responsibility for the care of the Earth and its people.
