Every year hundreds of thousands of people change their careers or update their skills. Engineers from the traditional manufacturing industries are retraining in computer engineering, and more people are starting their own business.

A dramatic change was made recently by boxer Barry McGuigan, ex-featherweight champion of the world, who is giving up boxing to present programmes on BBC television. 'It'll be a lot easier on the face,' he explained.

Chris Tipping studied economics at Cambridge, considered working in a government office but then decided to make singing - his great love - his career. For five years he sang with the Westminster Abbey Choir and the BBC Singers. However, finding it difficult to make enough money to support his family - he was married with two children - he became an assistant to a Member of Parliament. In this job he had to deal with many legal and tax problems and eventually decided to become a lawyer himself. Although he had to study for four or five hours every evening after work, he has no regrets. He is now

working as a lawyer in an office only two minutes from Westminster Abbey, where he still sings at weekends.

David Robinson, 37, started life as a music teacher. He noticed that musicians often suffered from bad necks and backs, caused by sitting for long periods on uncomfortable chairs. After twelve years as a teacher he turned to selling furniture designed for healthy sitting. His company, 'Alternative Sitting', is doing well. 'It started as a hobby,' he said, 'rather than a conscious pre-planned decision. I needed a change and the stimulus of running my own business.'

Barbara Winton left the world of business. She started as a jewellery designer, did a secretarial course, became a secretary and moved, for a high salary, to an oil company, where she became a senior administrator. After two years she left. 'I couldn't stand the falseness, selfishness and over-competitiveness of commerce,' she said, and now works as a homeopath, having completed a four-year course at the London College of Homeopathy.
