Susan is a pharmacist and spends most of her day working alone. She has several hobbies - she makes her own clothes and enjoys gardening - but she would like to get out of the house and meet people.

John has a very stressful job in an advertising agency. His friends think he is a workaholic and he does not have much time for hobbies. However, he would like to find a hobby which is both stimulating and relaxing.

Mary used to be a teacher, but she has been unemployed for almost a year. She spends most of her day reading but is now getting very bored. She is also very worried about her future.

Brian is a machine operator. His job is tiring but very monotonous. He spends most of his spare time watching his local football team and listening to jazz, but he would like an active, creative hobby which would give him more personal satisfaction.

Learn to play a musical instrument, join a chess club, take up photography, take up "do-it-yourself, take up squash, take up yoga, go to an evening class in flower arranging, go togging, do voluntary work at a local hospital, join a walking club, take flying lessons

ROLE PLAY

Does your heart sink when you are asked to call your hobby - because you haven't had a hobby since you were about ten? Don't worry. You must do something in your spare time: very few people spend all their day either working or just gazing into space!

Do the following quiz to learn more about yourself.

Answer "yes" or "no" to the following questions to see where your interests lie. Every time you answer "yes", write down what your interest is. For example, if you say "yes" to question 1. write down the name of the team you support.

The interests covered in these questions fall into eight categories, which are set out overleaf. You may find that your interests come under several categories; you may find, too, that you have one interest that comes into more than one category. For instance, if you are a football supporter, you might also be a collector of football programmes or souvenirs of one particular team.

If you find that you have answered "yes" to only two or three of these questions, it doesn’t mean you are a boring, dull, or uninterested person; it probably means you have one all-absorbing interest which takes up most of your spare time.
