JC: Of course, sir.
DH: Where are you from? I forgot (to forget - забывать; forget-forgot-forgotten).
JC: I'm from Wiltshire.
DH: And did you live in the city (в городе) or in the country (в сельской местности) there?
JC: In the city, in Salisbury. But I don't like cities, because it's too noisy (слишком шумно) and there are too many cars (слишком много машин). I would like to live in the country. It's much (намного) more beautiful. And it's safer (safe -безопасный) than the city, and people are nicer and kinder there.
DH: Then (тогда) why did you come to London?
JC: Well, I wanted to work in Scotland Yard. And London is the most special (особенный) city in the world. I just love it.

JC: And where would you like to live, sir?
DH: I would like to live in a skyscraper (небоскреб). I was born (родилсяl) in the city, and I feel uncomfortable in the country. Of course the city is more dangerous (опасный) and dirty (грязный), but it's much more interesting.
JC: Do you live in a flat (квартира), sir?
DH: I lived in a flat 2 years ago. Then Sybil and I had a son (сын), so we needed a bigger place. That's why (вот почему) we moved (to move - переехать) to a big cottage.

DH: And you, young Simon? Where would you like to live?
SC: I... I don't know, sir. The city is more exciting (волнующий, будоражащий), and you can earn (заработать) lots of money there. It's more comfortable than the country. But the
country is more natural (естественный) for me. I'd like to live in a cottage in the mountains (в горах), or by the sea (у моряl). In Cornwall, for example.
DH: Do you have a fiat?
C: Yes, it's very small and uncomfortable.
DH: And what about Alice? Does she have a flat, too?
C: Yes, her flat is bigger and more comfortable, but she doesn't like it. It's too expensive.
3. YOU NEED A NEW HOME!
DH: You should sell (продать) your flat and Alice's fiat and buy a cottage in Cornwall.
SC: What?!
DH: Why not?
SC: I... never thought (to think - думать; think-thought-thought) about it.
DH: Think about it now. Get married, change (менять) your name, sell your flats and go to Cornwall. It will be much safer. Come on, let's dream (мечтать)! How many rooms will you need?
SC: Well... not many. Just a kitchen, a living-room, a bedroom... no, 2 bedrooms, one for us and one for guests. Two bathrooms. A verandah, maybe. We will sit there and drink tea and look at the sea. We will need a garage, too.
JC: And a nursery (детская).
SC: But we don't have children (дети)... Oh. I see. Yes, why not?!

DH: Oh. it's very easy, young Simon. Who will be happy if you go to prison? You won't, of course. And poor lady Alice won't be happy. And I won't, because I hate (ненавижу) when good people go to prison. You, Connor?
JC: Of course not, sir! How can you ask?
DH: So, why should you go to prison, Mr. Cross?
SC: But the law (закон)...
DH: The law should protect (защищать) people, young Simon. Tomorrow constable Connor and I will go to London, and I will close (закрывать) the case.
SC: Thank you sir. I'll never forget it.
DH: You're welcome, Simon Cross... Everybody needs second chances (каждому бывает нужен второй шанс).
CHAPTER TEN
1. WE'RE GOING TO LONDON
JC: What now, sir?
DH: We're going to London, constable. Home, sweet home (дом, милый дом). Have you missed it (to miss smth. – скучать по чему-л.)?
JC: No, sir. I didn't have enough (достаточно) time.
DH: Ha! Right. Could you book the tickets, please?
JC: Yes, sir.
2. I'D LIKE TO BOOK A TICKET
T = Teller (кассир) JC = Joanne Connor
T: Hello, how can I help you?
JC: Hello. I'd like to book a ticket to London (билет в Лондон), please.
T: One-way (в одну сторону) or return (обратный)?
JC: One-way, please.
T: One person?
JC: No, two people.
T: When would you like to depart (отправиться)?
JC: Tomorrow in the morning.
T: There are three trains in the morning - at 8 o'clock, at 10 o'clock and at 12.30.
JC: At 10 o'clock, please. How much are the tickets?
T: 20 pounds each (каждый).
JC: OK, thank you.
T: What's your name, please?
JC: Joanne Connor.
T: Thank you. What's your telephone number, please?
JC: 67-38-95.
T: Thank you. Your tickets will be at window three (у третьего окна).
JC: Thank you! Bye.
3.1 HAVE BOOKED TWO TICKETS TO LONDON
Detective Hunt and Constable Connor come to the railway station (железнодорожный вокзал). Joanne goes to window three.
T: Hello! How can I help you?
JC: Hello, my name is Joanne Connor. I've booked two tickets to London.
T: Yes, there is a reservation. Two tickets to London, for the 10 o'clock train.
JC: Yes, that's right.
T: Can I see your ID (= identification, удостоверение личности), please?
JC: Here you are.
T: Thank you. It's 40 pounds for 2 tickets, please.
JC: Here you are.
T: Thank you. And here's your change (сдача). Have a nice journey (счастливого пути)!
4. DO YOU LIKE TRAVELLING?
In the train Detective Hunt and Constable Connor drink tea and talk.
DH: Have you travelled a lot (много) in your life, Connor?
JC: Yes, I like travelling very much. Especially (особенно) travelling abroad (за границу)! But it's rather expensive, so I've travelled mostly (по большей части) in England.
DH: Really? And where have you been?
JC: When I lived in Salisbury I travelled very weekend (выходные). I think I've been to all English cities.
DH: And what did you do there?
JC: Well, I just... was there. Walked along the streets (walk along the streets – прогуливаться по улицам), looked at people and sights (достопримечательности) and houses and churches (церкви), and took pictures (to take pictures – фотографировать). I always took a big flask (термос) of hot tea with me. When hungry, I went to a cafe and had lunch. And I always took a small notebook (записнная книжка) with me and described (to describe - описывать) everything I saw (to see – видеть). Oh, I really loved it.
DH: And how did you travel? By bus, by train, by car?
JC: Hitch-hiking (автостопом), sir.
DH: Jesus Christ, you're mad!
JC: It's not so dangerous, really. And it's free!

JC: What about you, sir? Have you ever (когда-либо) been abroad?
DH: Unfortunately (к сожалению) yes, constable.
JC: Unfortunately?
DH: I don't like travelling. But I've travelled a lot on my job. I've been to Russia, to Europe, to Africa... I've even been to a desert (пустыня) once.
JC: Oh you're so lucky (счастливый)! Where did you stay (останавливаться)?
DH: At police stations (полицейские участки), of course.
JC: Oh... and what did you see?
DH: Criminals, mostly (в основном). And policemen. I was there on business (по делам), you know.
5. A NEW CASE AGAIN!
JC = Joanne Connor DH = Detective Hunt
D = Duncan
Suddenly (вдруг) a telephone rings (звонит). Constable Connor answers (отвечает) it.
JC: Connor speaking.
D: Hi Joanne, it's Duncan from Scotland Yard! Please tell Mr. Hunt that Chief Detective Inspector asks him to come to his office as soon as (как только) he arrives (приезжать, прибывать) to London.
JC: Right, thank you. Sir, you should come to Chief Detective Inspector as soon as you arrive to London.
DH: Oh, really? That's good.
JC: Why? What does it mean?
DH: It means we have a new case, constable Connor.
