(пісня “ Oh, beautiful”)

The USA is the most powerful and highly developed country in the world. It is situated in the central part of the North American continent..

The continental part of the USA consists of the highland regions and two lowland regions. The principal rivers of the USA are the Mississippi and the Hudson River.

The USA has 50 states and the District of Columbia. The states differ very much in size, population and economical development.. Every state has its own flag, its own emblem and its own anthem too.

The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of American democracy. It stands on Liberty Island in New York. It is one of the first things people see when they arrive in New York by sea. Lady Liberty carries the torch of freedom in her right hand. In her left hand, she is holding a tablet with the inscription, “July 4, 1776 – American Independence Day.”

No general statement can be made about the landscape of the USA. It is a country of mountains and prairies, valleys and deserts.

(вірш “ I hear America singing”)

I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,

Those of mechanics, each one singing his as should be blithe and strong

The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,

The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves of work,

The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck,

The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands,

The woodcutter’s song, the plowboy’s on his way in the morning, or at noon intermission or at sundown,

The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work,

Or of the girl sewing or washing,

Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,

The day that belongs to the day – at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,

Singing with open mouth their strong melodious songs.

(пісня “ This land is your land”)

Grand Canyon is quite unusual in colour and architecture. Two hundred and eighty miles long, four to eighteen miles across, more than a mile deep, the Grand Canyon is a fantasy of stones and cliffs. Standing near it you can watch a wonderful play of colours that no artist could describe. The Colorado river, Nature’s main assistant in creating this work of sculpture, runs through the canyon.

Yellowstone N ational Park, the largest park of the USA. It is a world in itself. It was born of volcanic fire and later moulded by glaciers. It has high mountainous and cliffs, waterfalls, hot springs, steaming and bubbling, and the world’s greatest concentration of geysers, throwing their water from time to time high into the air.

The USA is a country with great holidays, customs and traditions. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting countries in the world.

(танець рок-н-рол)

Mark Twain, an author of the most popular children’s books all over the world. It is full of humor. Many events in this book really took place and characters were from real life. Tom Sawyer was very often a portrait of Mark Twain himself. Many of us would like to meet Tom Sawyer again and again.

(уривок з «Тома Сойєра)

Ben: “Stop her, sir! Ting-a-ling-ling!” “Ship up to back! Ting-a-ling-ling!” “Set her back on the stabboard! Ting-a-ling-ling! Chow! ch-chow-wow! Chow!”

Ben: “Hi- yi! You’re up a stump, aren’t you!”

Ben: “Hello, old chap, you got to work, hey?”

Tom: “Why, it’s you, Ben! I wasn’t noticing.”

Ben: “Say – I’m going in a-swimming, I am. Don’t you wish you could? But of course you’d rather work – wouldn’t you? Course you would!”

Tom: “What do you call work?”

Ben: “Why, isn’t that work?”

Tom: “Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. All I know, is, it suits Tom Sawyer.”

Ben: “Oh come, now, you don’t mean to let on that you like it?”

Tom: “Like it? Well, I don’t see why I oughtn’t to like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?”

Ben: “Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little.”

Tom: “No – no. You see, Aunt Polly’s awful particular about this fence – right here on the street. I reckon there isn’t one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it the way it’s got to be done.”

Ben: “No – is that so? Oh come, now – let me, just try. Only just a little – I’d let you, if you was me, Tom.”

Tom: “Ben, I’d like to; but Aunt Polly – well, Jim wanted to do it, but she wouldn’t let him; Sid wanted to do it, and she wouldn’t let Sid. Now don’t you see how I’m fixed? If you was to tackle this fence and anything was to happen to it – ”

Ben: “Oh, shucks, I’ll be just as careful. Now let me try. Say – I’ll give you the core of my apple.”

Tom: “Well, here – No, Ben, now don’t. I’m afraid – ”

Ben: “I’ll give you all of it!”

Canada

Canada, an independent federal state, is one of the most developed countries in the world.

Canada is the second largest country in the world. Although the country is vast, more than 80 per cent of the population lives in a narrow strip of arable land in its southern part, along the border with the United States. By the way, the Canada-US border is the longest undefended border in the world.

If you look at the map of North America, you will see a huge inland sea called Hudson Bay extending into the heart of Canada. Wrapped around its bay like a horseshoe is a rocky region called the Canadian Shield. It is Canada’s largest geographical feature. The Shield is consider to be nucleus of the North American continent and made up of the roots of ancient mountains.

There are a lot of rivers and lakes in Canada. Among them there are the Great Bear Lake, the Great Slave Lake and the Great Lakes District. The largest rivers are the Nelson, the Ottawa, the Mackenzie and the Yukon.

Canada is very rich in forest and fur-bearing animals.

Before the 15th century Canada was populated by different Indian tribes. In the far north there were tribes of Eskimos. Let’s never forget about them. Colonists were people who respected the Indians. One of them is Henry Longfellow.

(вірш “The Arrow and the song”)

I short an arrow into the air,

It fell to earth, I knew not where;

For, so swiftly it flew, the sight

Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,

It fell to earth, I knew not where;

For who has sight so keen and strong,

That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak

I found the arrow, still unbroken;

And the song, from beginning to end,

I found again in the heart of a friend.

Modern Canada originated as a country of immigrants. The first large two European groups to come here were the British and the French. Each group brought its own language, system of government, laws and culture. Canada today is a vibrant multi-racial and multicultural mosaic – home to people from more than 200 countries. I believe everybody who lives here thinks this country to be a lovely land as they sing in the song Oh Lovely Land.

(пісня “ Oh, lovely land’)

Oh lovely land whose mountains run

From peak to peak to seek the sun,

And wherw we take the sacred firee

Of life and love to raise them highter.

Oh Canada, oh promised land,

This is the dream our fathers planned,

And though the rich have ravished you,

We swear to make this dream come true.

Oh lovely land where Aprils rains

And Aprils suns break ancient chains,

And where we too such bounties share,

Forever free, and ever fair.

Australia

(вірш “ My country”)

The love of field and coppice, Of green and shaded lanes, Of ordered woods and gardens Is running in your veins, Strong love of grey-blue distance, Brown streams and soft dim skies, I know but cannot share it, My love is otherwise. I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of droughts and flooding rains; I love her far horizons, I love her jewel-sea, Her beauty and her terror- The wide brown land for me! The tragic ringbarked forests, Stark white beneath the moon, The sapphire misted mountains, The hot gold hush of noon, Green tangle of the brushes, Where lithe lianas coil, And orchids deck the tree tops And ferns the crimson soil. Core of my heart, my country! Her pitiless blue sky, When sick at heart around us We see the cattle die- But then the grey clouds gather And we can bless again The drumming of an army, The steady soaking rain. Core of my heart my country! Land of the Rainbow Gold, For flood and fire and famine She pays us back threefold, Over the thirsty paddocks, Watch after many days, The filmy veil of greenness That thickens as we gaze. An opal-hearted country, A wilful lavish land- All you who have not loved her, You will not understand- Though earth holds many splendours Wherever I may die, I know to what brown country, My homing thoughts will fly.

Australia is the world's smallest, flattest continent and largest island. It is the only state in the world that occupies the territory of a whole continent. The name “Australia” came from the Latin word for of the South. The island continent is washed by two great oceans -- the Pacific and the Indian. Australia is one of the world's most urbanized countries, with 70 per cent of the population living in the 10 largest cities. Australia is divided into six states and two territories. It is a beautiful and ancient land with a remarkable diversity of unusual plants, animals and landscapes.

Approximately a third of Australia is hot desert.

North-east of Australia is apart of the Pacific Ocean called the Corral Sea. Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the largest complex of coral reefs and islands in the world. Coral is formed from the dead bodies of tiny swa creatures called polyps. A coral reef protects the coast from the force of the ocean waves. The calm waters inside the reef are very clear.

There are some tourist areas which are inland in Australia. Ayers Rock is the most famous of strange rocks standing up out of the flat desert floor. It is situated in the middle of thousands kilometres of red, waterless desert. Ayers Rock is often called “the world’s largest pebble”.

Australia is the flattest of all continents. Its most significant mountain chain is the Great Dividing Range running down most of the east coast. Its eastern projection is known as the Australian Alps.

Australia is a beautiful and ancient land with a remarkable diversity of unusual plants, animals and landscapes, which is explained by the isolation of Australia from other continents. Australian animals are very unusual. Among them there are kangaroos, duck-bills, koala-bears and others. Nine tenth of animal species of Australia do not exist in other parts of the world.

It’s common knowledge that Australia is famous for its sheep. There is even a very popular Australian song Waltzing Matilda about a poor man and a sheep. Its content reflects Australia’s history and national features of white settlers in the Outback.

(пісня “ Waltzing Matilda”)

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a Coolibah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me
And he sang as he watched and waited til his billy boiled
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me

Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tuckerbag
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me
And he sang as he watched and waited til his billy boiled
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me

New Zealand.

New Zealand is an island country in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. Aotearoa or the land of white Long White Cloud as New Zealand is often called in Maori. It was named so because of the cloudiness of its skies, particularly along its mountainous backbone. And it’s the effect of volcano activity. Every year more than 100 earthquakes happen in this part of the world, and New Zealand is also called Shaky Isles. The country is situated on two main islands – the North Island and the South Island – and several dozen smaller ones. Two large islands are separated by Cook Strait, named in honour of the famous captain James Cook, who made his first landing on the coast of the North Island in 1769.

The country once belonged to the British empire. Today it is an independent country.

A floral emblem of New Zealand is the fern. New Zealanders call themselves Kiwis and their country Kiwiland. The Kiwi is a rare flightless bird native to New Zealand, a living national emblem of the country.

The first people who settled in New Zealand were brown-skinned people called Maoris. The official New Zealand’s coat of arms depicts a white woman and a Maori man standing on leaves of fern and looking at each other over a shield of five badges.

Maori nave retained their culture, lifestyle and view of the world. Formerly, Maori culture was transmitted orally, through the telling of stories, songs and the reciting of genealogies. It was also represented in carvings and woven panels. Beautiful songs and dances are as old as the Maori people itself.

(пісня “ Pokarecare”)

How placid are the ripples of restless Waiapu, Dear they know of your returning, From far across the sea. Refrain Dear heart of mine, I’ll wait for thee, My love is thine alone, to Eternity. You have written me a letter, and you signed it with a kiss, when I answer this evening, I will simply tell you this. Refrain   We’ll be wed on your returning, in love for evermore, dear, I’ll always be faithful, to the one whom I adore. Refrain

1. Our round the world tour to the English-speaking countries has come to the end.

2. It’s high time to return home. “East or west home is best”

1. Wherever we go, we always return home, where everything is dear and glad to us.

2. And I think that you will never find such a beautiful nature like in Ukraine.

1. Right you are. Our language, our songs are the most colourful and gentle. So we say, “There is no place like home”.
