1 Captain Singinza’s training program

This is a training program for an overseas visitor to British Rail’s engineering works at Derby.

Look at these questions:

1 Why is Captain Singinza visiting the Derby Locomotive Works?

2 How long will his visit last?

3 Who is the first person he will see?

4 When does he have a break in his program?

Now read the program through. Find the answers to the above questions. Remember, you do not have to understand every word to answer the questions.

2 Make sure that there are …

Here is a copy of the manual and the notes which Peter Walker used to prepare his talk to the trainees. First, read the text.

It should be ensured that there are enough rollers. At least three rollers of the same diameter are required. If more are used, the load can be moved faster as there is no delay when the roller is transferred from the back to the front. The load is to be supported with a flat plate, if its weight cannot be supported by the load itself at any point along its base. It must be remembered hat the plate must be thick enough to support the load. When the rollers are to be placed under the load, four blocks of wood of identical thickness, that are thicker than the rollers, must be selected. The load should be lifted with a crowbar and should be placed on the blocks. The required number of rollers should be placed under the load. The complete load should be lifted with crowbars, the wooden blocks should be removed, and the load should be lowered evenly on to the rollers.

Now look at the notes and either say or write out the instructions.

A – first-make sure – enough rollers B – need at least 3 rollers – same diameter C If us more – can move load faster – no delay when transfer roller back to front D Support load with flat plate – important if load unable to support own weight along base E Remember – plate – thick enough – support load F Rollers – under load – select four blocks of wood – same thickness – thicker than rollers G Place – rollers under load H Lift load – crowbars – remove wooden blocks – lower load evenly on to rollers

3 What must you do? What mustn’t you do?

Here are some of the signs which Captain Singinza saw in the workshops.

If you saw these signs, when would you say:

‘Don’t use water to put out the fire.’ _______

‘You’re not allowed to smoke here.’ _______

‘I wouldn’t drink that water, if I were you.’ _______

‘You mustn’t walk along there.’ _______

‘You must wear gloves when handling corrosive substances.’ _______

‘Be careful, you might get a shock.’ _______

‘Take care. There are overhead loads in here.’ _______
