Watergate scandal» is one of the most important events in the history of USA mass media. What do you think about participating mass media in this scandal?

(немного инфы о самом скандале)

First of all, the Watergate scandal is political scandal during the 1970s in the United States resulting from the break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. Effects of the scandal eventually led to the resignation of Richard Nixon, the President of the United States.

And of course The connection between the break-in and the re-election campaign committee was highlighted by media coverage. During this period, most of the media failed to grasp the implications of the scandal.

The Administration and their supporters accused the media of making "wild accusations", putting too much emphasis on the story, and of having a liberal bias against the Administration. Nixon said in a May 1974 interview with a supporter that if he had followed the liberal policies which he thought the media preferred, "Watergate would have been a blip." The media and their supporters noted that most of the reporting turned out to be accurate; the competitive nature of the media guaranteed the massive coverage of the political scandal. Applications to journalism schools reached an all-time high in 1974.

(Мое мнение например)Mass media played a great role in this scandal I think, because if they didn’t pay attention to it, it would be a big mistake to leave Richard Nixon at his post of the president of the United States. it was revealed that President Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices and that he had recorded many conversations of the democrats, and of course it’s unfair not only to other politicians but to people too. It became clear later that The tape, which was found, proved that the President had lied to the nation, to his closest aides, and to his own lawyers – for more than two years. And it’s just the good opportunity to mass media to highlight all this political confusion and help everyone to make a right conclusion.

Why do you think usual people prefer to buy tabloids rather than broadsheets? What’s the difference between them?

First of all, in the tabloids less print and far more pictures. Of course it immediately attracts your attention. For example when you are on your way to work, you just take the brightest one and go on. Tabloids can be considered like «easy reading» and broadsheets like «quality newspapers». Tabloids report news in a very condensed form. They write about celebrities, the British Royal Family, sport, crime stories and scandals.

Broadsheets give their readers long, detailed reports on the latest news and focus on more serious things: politics, economy, government, international events, business, culture.

For usual people I think it’s more interesting to read about gossips, about some shocking news even they are not true. Another point when we are talking about business people. They start their day with broadsheets, cause Their information is always very reliable. (тему можно развить и дальше не ваше желание)
