Ex. I. Read the text:
When you finish writing your letter of application to the company you have chosen, you should prepare a Curriculum Vitae (CV) or a Resume. A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a brief personal history. CVs are required for all except the most junior jobs, and are used as a basis for assessment and comparison of applicants for a job. CVs provide information about applicants and should be set out in a way that is easy to read.
They should include:
· name, address and telephone number
· date and place of birth
· nationality
· married or single (give the ages of children, if any)
· dates and places of education
· examinations passed, especially if internationally recognized
· knowledge of English and other languages
· previous employment and work experience
· outside interests, hobbies and so on.
CVs should be typed on plain paper. They can vary slightly in the layout, but all give the same basic information. A CV is a little more formal in format then a Resume, usually two pages (or more, if you are highly experienced). It is a detailed listing that usually includes publications, professional activities, honors and additional information.
European CVs have varying formats. Each European country has different recruitment practices, but all use CVs instead of Resumes. A CV is like a chronological shopping list of what you have achieved rather than a description of your education and work history. The UK CV comes closest to the American Resume.
Preparing a CV many job hunters stress details that don’t count, because sometimes it is rather difficult to decide what to stress and what to leave out. An employer’s main interest is in what you can do for the company. Include information that shows that you are the right kind of person for the job. Leave out anything that might give an employer reason for passing you by. If an employer realizes that you are the right person for a particular position, he will give you an appointment.
Ex. II. Answer the following questions on the text:
1. What is a Curriculum Vitae?
2. What is a Curriculum Vitae used for?
3. What kind of information do all CVs give to employers?
4. Do all European countries use CVs or Resumes?
5. What details do many job hunters stress when preparing a CV?
6. Is it difficult for them to decide what to stress and what to leave out?
7. What will an employer do if he realizes that an applicant is the right person for a particular position?
Ex. III. Learn the definitions of the following words:

4) an employer – a person who pays people to work for him;
5) an appointment – an arrangement to meet someone at a particular time and place, especially a formal or official meeting;
6) recruitment – finding someone to employ for a particular job;
7) to be experienced – to be good at something because you have spent a lot of time doing it.
