First, avoid foods high in anti-nutrients (grains and legumes) that resist digestive processing. Then, chew thoroughly until solid food feels almost like liquid in your mouth, and eliminate digestion-resistant insoluble fiber from your diet, such as whole grains, corn, and the skins of starchy tubers. If you experience gas, bloating, or undigested food in your stool, it is also best to limit insoluble fiber, such as in leafy greens like kale, as well as other produce like cauliflower, apples, and pears.
Stomach
Remember that heartburn, acid reflux, belching, bloating after meals, and undigested food in your stool are all signs that your stomach acid is too low, not too high. Alter your diet, and take lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, or digestive bitters to increase your body’s natural production of HCl, as well as improve the integrity of your stomach’s mucosal lining. This will help to ensure that you have adequate stomach acid to properly digest your food.
Liver and gallbladder
Pay close attention to how you feel after fatty meals, and check the color of your stools. Any pain or discomfort may indicate that you’re not digesting fats well and that your liver and gallbladder need support. Be very strict about eliminating all grain products from your diet, and take supplemental digestive enzymes and ox bile if dietary changes don’t bring enough improvement. There are times when the long-term damage takes more time and support to heal, but eliminating grains and reducing overall stress are the first critical steps.
Pancreas
Remember the entire downstream effect of the digestive process and that adequate levels of HCl (stomach acid) are critical to signaling secretion of the appropriate amount of digestive enzymes from the pancreas. Your pancreas is smart, and it essentially “reads” the chyme to determine its secretions before food moves on through your small intestine. If you have symptoms of poor digestion, or if you know that you have compromised pancreatic function, supplementing with digestive enzymes may be a good idea for you.
Small intestine
Any inflammatory condition is likely rooted in your ability to properly digest and absorb your food. If you struggle with acne, psoriasis, joint pain, or even an advanced autoimmune condition, you can largely resolve these issues by healing your small intestine and getting it to function in a calm state rather than a chronic state of immune-response (leaky gut).
