Theme: The role of the culture

Subtheme: Identifying cultural world views.

Task 1:

Some people have an Eastern outlook on life, others a Western perspective. What is yours?

A) Respond to each of the following items with

"1" if it never relates to you

1) How do people react in a different culture?

2) Why “Time is money” for Americans?

3) How do people successfully find solutions to problems of cultural values and beliefs?

Task 4: Writing

Write an argumentative essay on the following topic: “Different cultural values change the attitudes of actors in intercultural communication”.

Guidelines for writing an argumentative essay:

Ø Your writing needs to persuade your readers;

Ø You have to develop certain strategies and tools in order to put your point across effectively;

Ø Divide your essay in to paragraphs;

Ø Introductory statements (The first sentence of your essay needs to be interesting enough to make your reader want to keep reading);

Ø Thesis statement (the last sentence of your first paragraph. It states the position you are arguing, that is, which side you are going to defend);

Ø Presenting your case once

Ø Anticipating objections (Present your own views then consider critically the views of the opposition);

Ø Conclusion (It sums up the thesis and evidence in favour of it, leaving your reader with a clear picture as to the position you have taken and why).
