Let`s talk about Belarusian customs and traditions. What can you tell me about your favourite holiday?
An English proverb says, so many countries so many customs. I`m fully agree with the proverb. There are many countries and nations in the world and each of them has its own customs, traditions, national clothing and symbols, traditional food, holidays, festivals, ceremonies and so on.
Traditions and customs can be ancient and modern, funny and strange. They can be connected with historical events and religion, people`s private live and royal families, but all of them are interesting and important. They make a nation special
There are many interesting traditions and customs in Belarus. For instance, there is a custom "masletitsa", which I like very much. It is a funny holiday, when we say "good bye" to the winter and meet the spring. On this day we cook pancakes, burn "maslenitsa", which is a big straw doll, and apologize to each other.
Are you proud of our national holidays and traditions?
Of course, I`m proud of our national holidays and traditions. It`s not only because they are interesting and beautiful. Traditions, holidays and rituals link the present with the past, help pass the knowledge, experience, wisdom, skills, habits from the older generations to the new ones. I am sure that children, teenagers and young people should know and observe the traditions of their country. Holidays, traditions and rituals help pupils learn more about the history and culture of their country. Celebrating national and local holidays makes young people united and has a great impact on their character-shaping. To my mind, children should also know the origins of our holidays. There is no doubt that our future depends on the younger generation and adults must teach them to preserve the holidays, customs and traditions.
What questions can you ask your British friend about his/her birthday celebration?
Where do you have your birthday party? At home or somewhere else?
Do you invite your friends to your birthday party?
Do you like presents and birthday cakes with candles?
Do you often get birthday cards?
What do you usually do at your birthday party?
Which holiday celebration in Belarus will you recommend your British friend?
There are many beautiful and interesting holiday celebrations in Belarus. I would recommend my British friend to take part in our national holiday called Kupalle. This holiday is usually celebrated on the night of the 7th of July. In my opinion, it is one of the most mysterious holidays in Belarus.
There are a lot of legends and customs connected with this magic holiday. According to one of them, there is a constant struggle between good and evil (dark and light) in our souls. People try to help the forces of light and themselves to defeat the evil, witches and wizards. They light bonfires, dance and sing songs around them. Jumping over the fire is an act of purification. The next tradition is searching a magic flower in the forest (it blossoms only once a year as the legend says). And the one who is lucky to find it will master the language of grass, trees, birds and animals and will be happy the rest of his life.
Besides it will be interesting for my British friend to visit different Belarusian festivals. If he is interested in
