Motivation Letter

__________________________________________

A letter of motivation is the document that accompanies your CV when you are applying for a master’s course or degree. Its goal is to introduce the CV, to bring to attention aspects of your activity that can help your application and are not listed or not presented in the proper light in the CV. In short, its goal is to answer the sponsor's question: "Why should I give that grant to this applicant?"

A letter of motivation or a motivation letter is a short essay where you should introduce yourself and explain why you are applying for a programme. It is necessary to mention your research interests, the topic of your Bachelor's or Master's thesis and other academic details; explain your planned objectives and expected results; how your assignment will add value to your ongoing local interests and also those in your Home and Host Universities.

The length of a letter of motivation is typically one page and no more than two pages, with a quite rigid structure and the layout of a letter. Interests and experiences abroad (relevant for the grant period) can be added in your CV.

Layout

§ 1 Introduction A quick paragraph to say why you are writing. Don't make the reader guess or wade through a lot of text. Just come right out and say why you are writing. The goal of the first is to specify what you are applying for. State the reason for the letter, i.e. identify which of the specific available courses /programs you are applying for and if more than one, present a prioritized list. Try to make the connection as personable as possible.
§ 2, 3, 4, 5 Body These two or three paragraphs should list your specific skills and abilities which make you a good candidate for a Master’s course, your motivations to study abroad. Explain your reasons for undertaking graduate work, as well as an explanation of your academic interests, including their relation to your undergraduate study, life and professional goals. In short, the second paragraph should show why you are good for the course. The third should point out why you want it. Outline your professional interests and your career goals and expectation, your futurepersonal input to the programme, what you expect to get out of the project and what makes you the right person for this project.
§ 6 Conclusion The final paragraph will summarize your main points and reassert your main claim. It should point out your main points, but should not repeat specific examples.Thank the admissions committee for their time.

Model

1 a) Read the following motivation letter for a Master’s degree and pay attention to its structure.

Dear Sir or Madam,   My name is.... with this letter, I would like to apply as a graduate student in the Mundus Programme at the University of Natural Sciences. I studied biotechnology at the University of Natural Sciences from 2001 to 2005 and acquired a Bachelor of Biotechnology last October. During those four years, I studied microbiology, molecular biology, genomic engineering, plant, animal, environmental and medical biotechnology, as well as several subjects in agricultural biotechnology in the fourth year.   I am particularly interested in research related to agricultural biotechnology, especially plant biotechnology and the micropropagation of the flowering plants, and I did research on the micropropagation of an endemic Vietnamese slipper orchid for my thesis. During this research, I was trained to be a laboratory scientist, and to work individually or with a team. I have endeavored to upgrade my education by using new methods and protocol for plant propagation when taking part in research under the instruction of my supervisor. However, through work dealing with micropropagation problems, I came to recognize that my knowledge is still limited in many areas. Therefore, I plan further study of plant biotechnology and agricultural management, so that I can be a well-equipped and professional researcher.   I would like to have the opportunity to enroll in your master's course, the Agri Mundus programme. This top-level programme will provide me advanced knowledge in the fields of agricultural development and horticultural crop managemen t. In addition, I will have the opportunity to meet different people from different cultures, offering me different points of view and contributing to my flexibility and creativity. Moreover, I have come to realize that a deep and solid education is needed to have a critical understanding of the problems that my country is facing and their solutions.   Personally, I am a perseverant person, someone who is motivated and ambitious. My teachers and supervisors know me as a courteous and resourceful student, and my classmates know me as a pleasant friend and an enthusiastic coworker. With my good command of English and French, I will not have difficulty in studying subjects taught in those languages. I have also taken part in many social volunteer activities and worked with foreigners, so I am able to adapt to a constantly changing work environment and maintain good working relationships with individuals of different cultural backgrounds.   To me, as a young female prospective researcher, it is my dream to devote a part of my life to the development of biotechnology in my country. Viet Nam is still an underdeveloped, and the government has considered the goal of biotechnological development through 2020 as a significant and urgent corequisite for the country’s industrialization and modernization. Therefore, if I successfully graduate from the Agri Mundus programme and make practical use of what I have learned, I may be able to lead a group of researchers in future. Through scientific achievement   I hope that I will be accepted as an applicant and a beneficiary of the Eramus Mundus Scholarship to study in the Agri Mundus Programme in the 2009 – 2010 academic years. I understand that admission to the Eramus Mundus Scholarship is competitive, but I am also confident that I'm qualified and eager, and prepared to meet all of its challenges. I would be most grateful if you could give my application your most favorable consideration.   Yours faithfully, Mary Smith Salutation Introduction: -introduce yourself -specify the programme you are applying for -mention the university you have graduated from and subjects you studied Main body: - list your specific skills and abilities -your current and future research interests   - what you expect to get out of the project   - what makes you the right person for this project -previous experience   -your future personal input to the programme -your career goals and expectation   Conclusion: -reassert your main claim -thank the admissions committee for their time Closing Signature
