Exercise 1. Study the following words and definitions.
1. arson – the act of deliberately setting fire to a property.(поджог)
2. bail – money paid or promised so that an accused person will not be kept in prison before coming to trail. (залог)
3. break in – enter premises by force, esp. with criminal intent. (взламывать)
4. burglary – entry into a building illegally with intent to commit theft, do bodily harm or damage.(незаконное проникновение в помещение)
5. contempt of court – disobedience to or disrespect for a court or law and its officers. (Неуважение к суду)
6. defamation – attack on the good reputation of; (to defame) speak ill of; spreading of evil report. (Клевета)
7. embezzlement – fraudulent diversion money etc. from a company, fund etc., to one’s own use. Растрата,хищение, присвоение имущества
8. felony – any of a class of usually violent crimes (murder, wounding, arson, rape, robbery).(тяжкое уголовное преступление)
9. fraud – the crime of swindling people. (обман, мошенничество, жульничество)
10. libel – a published false statement making damage to a person’s reputation. (клевета)
11. pending – awaiting decision or settlement, undecided. незаконченный, ожидающий решения
12. plaintiff – a person who brings a case against another into court.(истец)
13. QC (Queen’s Counsel) – a counsel to the Crown, taking precedence over barristers.
14. murder – the unlawful premeditated killing of a human being by another.
15. manslaughter – the unlawful killing of a human being without malice premeditation. (Человекоубийство)
16. ransom – a sum of money or another payment demanded or paid for a release of a prisoner.(выкуп)
17. tip off – (give a person) a hint or a piece of special information or warning, esp. discreetly or confidentially. (навести на след, дать подсказку)
18. to be remanded in custody – to be returned to guardianship, esp. to allow further inquires to be made. быть возвращенным под стражу
19. handling stolen goods – illegal selling of stolen goods.
Exercise 2. Complete the sentences with the words from the box.
