Earn money (from your job)

Earn a living

Have enough money (to live comfortably)

Make money (from home, by working hard)

Owe money (to the person who has lent it to you,

IOU = I owe you)

Save up money (for a luxury cruise)

Your money at the bank

Your employer pays your salary into your current account. Every month you receive a bank statement showing your transactions and the final balance. If you want to save money and earn interest on your savings, you will need a special account. You can withdraw money at a cash point / cash machine (AmE ATM). You can arrange an overdraft (= a temporary negative balance, meaning you are owe your bank money at interest) for a small fee. If you have a negative balance, you are ‘ in the red’. Nobody likes being in debt / getting into debt and most people try to clear / settle their overdraft as soon as possible.

In business the phrase ‘ line of credit’ is more common than ‘overdraft’. A line of credit can be given by a bank or a supplier.

You may need to take out / get a loan from the bank. Note that the bank lends you money, and you borrow money from the bank. The bank charges you interest on the loan and you pay interest on the loan. The interest rate is usually given as an APR (annual percentage rate) which shows the overall cost of loan inducing bank charges as well as interest. You repay the loanin monthly instalments.

To buy your own house you need to take out / arrange a special type of a long-term loan called amortgage.

Spending money at the shops.

Anna and Carla are out shopping on the last afternoon of a business trip.

Anna: Look at these shoes. There is a discount (=reduction) of 50%. That’s very good value for money – you’d pay a lot more in our country.

Carla: Really? 50% off? That’s a real bargain. Why don’t you try them on? Hey, look at this blouse. No, it’s too expensive – I cannot afford it.

Anna: Let me see the price. Wow! That’s a real rip-off (=much too expensive). But you are coming back in January, right? It might be in the sales.

Carla: Look over here. This skirt is on sale. It’s be en reduced by £30.

Anna: Yes, but it’s still expensive. It’s not worth it. We saw something very similar for sale in the last shop.

(at the checkout)

Anna: Have you got any local currency? I’ve run out.

Carla: Just a few notes and a bit of change.

Anna: Never mind, I’ll pay by credit card. Do you take credit cards?

Shop assistant: Sure, we do. Here is your receipt, sign here for me please. Thank you. Have a nice day!

Not that ‘ for sale’ means available to buy, while ‘ on sale’ means available to buy at a cheaper price than normal.

‘PAY’

Pay a lot of money for it, £80 for a dress, the bill (at a restaurant), income tax

Pay for a meal, the drinks, my ticket, the taxi

Pay by credit card, cheque, travellers’ cheque

Pay with my card

Pain in cash, euros/dollars
