Hi, my name is Dr. Cave, and I’m going to answer some of your questions about healthy lifestyle. Many people ask me, why is it that some countries have higher life expectancies than other. Well, obviously there are lots of important factors here. The physical conditions in the country, the climate, war, of course, and famine.

Interestingly though, probably the most important factor in determining life expectancy is, in fact, our genetic history. It depends on how healthy our parents are, and even our grandparents before that. And not just their genes, but their lifestyles, too.

And, of course, there are many things we can do ourselves. Men, funnily enough, one of the things they can do is to get married, and preferably to a younger woman. It seems that late marriage and particularly children in later life is one of the things that keeps husbands and fathers young and in good shape. Women, however, have a greater chance of living longer if they avoid marriage.

Healthy lifestyle also helps us live longer: living in the country, for example, as opposed to the city. That makes a difference. Diet, eating carefully, having a healthy balanced diet is important.

We do need to watch our weight but you need to be careful not to overdo it. Putting on a lot of weight in a short space of time, or losing it quickly for that matter, is very unhealthy. Just keep an eye on things and cut down on excesses - too much chocolate and fatty or fried foods. A little wine is OK, but for a really healthy lifestyle you would have to give up alcohol, smoking and all that kind of thing. Drink as much water as possible. And sleep - about eight hours' sleep, no longer, but have a good rest after lunch

And your life needs to be fun! It must be entertaining, and this is something people often forget about. It's been shown that depressed people tend to die younger. We need life to be filled with interests and physical activities. I mean, you don't necessarily need to go jogging every day or work out in the gym to be in good shape. A brisk walk would do the job, twenty-five minutes. Walk to work, for example, rather than catch the bus. And some mental activity, too, a bit of intellectual exercise, a crossword or puzzle, doing your tax accounts maybe - something to keep the brain fit.

A very important thing is that stress has to be avoided. If you do lead a very busy life, you need to find time to relieve the stress. Exercise does that, it releases the endorphins in the brain and helps you relax. Massage is very good, too.
