The history of the Tula State Teachers’ Training University goes back to 1938 when the first students entered it. One hundred and fifty six first-year students started the course of training at three faculties: Russian and Literature, History, Physics and Mathematics.

At present there are about eight thousand students in the University. Among them there are 2 100 extra-mural students who work during the day. Eleven faculties train teachers in different subjects: Russian, Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Geography, Chemistry, Biology, Foreign Languages and others. The teaching staff of the University consists of professors, assistant professors, senior teachers and assistants. Among them there are 50 professors and academicians.

In 1956 the University (the Institute then) was named after Leo Tolstoy. There were many reasons for it: Leo Tolstoy is our fellow-countryman, he organized a school for peasants’ children in Yasnsya Polyana and made a great contribution to Pedagogics.

The University is housed in four buildings. The old building at 7 Mendeleyev Street houses the faculties of Philology and History. The main building at 125, Lenin Avenue houses the faculties of Mathematics, Foreign Languages Primary Education and the International faculty. It’s a big modern building. In front of it there is monument to Leo Tolstoy.

We have good libraries and reading-rooms and for those who go in for sports there are good gymnasiums and a stadium.

At the faculty of Foreign Languages there is a well-equipped language laboratory where the students are able to have ear-training in order to improve their pronunciation and intonation. The work in the laboratory helps the students to master the language.

It goes without saying that all the students are proud of their University.
