STATE VERBS

States of being

is — is being (= is behaving)

look (=has the appearance) — is looking (= is watching)

seems (= has the behaviour) — is seeming

appears (= has the behaviour) — is appearing (= is performing)

acts (= has the behaviour) — is acting (= is performing)

becomes/gets = changes

is becoming/is getting = gradually changing/is working to become/for

*That suit is becoming to you. (= attractive)

*The crowd goes wild. (not `wildly`, cause `goes` here = `behaves`)

Sensory verbs

A STATE verb indicates how we experience the world around us.

A DYNAMIC verb indicates an action we do or perform.

feels (I feel sick. I`m feeling sick [ modern English ]) — Sue is feeling the dots to read the book

(= is touching)

I`m feeling your forehead to check for a fever

(= am touching)

hear — I am hearing you (= listening to you [ informal ])

sees — Mario is seeing Sue (= visiting/dating)

sounds — The cook is sounding the dinner bell (=is ringing)

tastes (-»- spicy) — The cook is tasting the soup (= is trying)

Mental States

Do NOT use in Continuous EVER:

know, believe, understand, realize, need, love, miss, appreciate.

Note:

thinks — He is carefully thinking about it («обдумывает»)

remembers — He is often remembering his childhood («всё вспоминает...»)

Used by some speakers:

I am hating this!

I am liking this!

Newer usage:

How are you liking your new school?

I`m loving it!

Mental cognition is usually expressed with a nonprogressive verb; however, it can be expressed as an ongoing process (a state undergoing change) by using an infinitive phrase.
He's starting to thinkabout finding a new job.
We are beginning to understandthe problem.
They are trying to rememberwhat happened.
They are starting to realizewhat they can do.
They are continuing to appreciatetheir situation.

Present Perfect Continuous

Not all, but some "cognitive" verbs can express an ongoing state by using the present perfect, which indicates an action that began in the past and continues up until the present.
He has been thinkingabout finding a new job.
She has been wantingto go to college.
He has been likinghis new job.
We have been lovingour new car. (enjoying)
She has been missingher family. (feeling homesick)
