Geometric PLP Alignment

A Geometric PLP Alignment is an alignment based upon the relationship of a physical Plane, Line and Point (PLP), and CAD Defined coordinates, which define the part in the X, Y and Z.

 

It is a more accurate method of alignment compared to the Free Form Alignment, because it works directly from CAD Nominal Values and can be an easier method to understand.

 

Geometric PLP is a very repeatable alignment method, but can only be so if the geometry is present.

 

In this example we are using the Speaker Housing. The CAD file for this part is Speaker.odx.

 

First we need to select the desired geometry.

In this example we will be using Plane 1, Line 1 and the centre of Circle 1 to give us our Plane Line Point.

 

We need two circles in order to define our line. Line 1 is a line from the centre of Circle 1 to the centre of Circle 2.

 

 

To create the line select the Lines Button and choose the Line: Two Points .

 

 

From the drop down lists select Circle 1 for Reference Point 1 and Circle 2 for Reference Point 2.

 

 

Probe the desired geometry.

 

When completed your Geometric Group should be as below.

 

 

We can now create the Geometric PLP alignment.

 

Move up the levels until Geometric Group 1 is Closed.

 

From the Alignments Sub-Menu icon , in the Element Toolbar:

 

Choose the Geometric PLP Alignment button .

 

The Geometric PLP alignment dialogue box appears and prompts the user to define the items for the alignment

 

 

We are using the centre of Circle 2 as our point so from the Point drop down list, select Circle 2::Centre.

 

At this stage PowerINSPECT doesn’t know the nominals for the point.

 

To retrieve the nominals for the centre of Circle 2, click the button.

This should return the nominals of X -74.96001, Y -79.52725 and Z 69.3.

 

We also need to set the orientation of the line. In this example it is Y to Y-.

 

Select Y/Y- from the Orienated direction drop down list.

 

 

The Geometric PLP alignment dialog box should be as above.

 

Clicking OK will now align the part to the CAD.
