Supplementary reading:

Chapter One, The Beginnings of a Science in E.H. Carr, The Twenty Years’ Crisis, pp. 3-11. Posted on Moodle

This assessment is a literature review on the chapter, ‘Utopia and Reality’ which is from E. H. Carr’s famous book, The Twenty Years’ Crisis. You are also expected to read the chapter one before reading the next chapter. Although you can utilise the supplementary reading in your review, your critical review must be on the chapter, ‘Utopia and Reality’. The review will include both a summary of the main points as well as a critical analysis of the content. You will be evaluated on your ability to interpret the text, along with your critical engagement of the text. DO NOT simply quote from the text and tell the reader what Carr wrote. You must explore the content on a much deeper level and present the reader with a convincing argument that you not only understand the text but also its relationship to larger questions in IR. Further, the structure and style will be evaluated.

Presentation and Submission

The document will be 1,000 words in length (plus/minus 100 words). Submissions over or under this limit will earn a 5% deduction. The format should include the use of 12 point font in either Times New Roman or Arial style with 1.5 spacing. The document should include a coversheet with your candidate number (NOT student number), the date of submission, seminar group (e.g. A), and the name of the assessment, i.e. ‘IR FOLIO 1’. Please use the coversheet template which is posted on Moodle. DO NOT include your name anywhere.

This assessment is due Wednesday, 13th Nov. by 10 am. ONE hardcopy version of the assessment is to be submitted in the drop-box located in front of the reception on the ground floor. DO NOT use plastic wallets when submitting the hardcopy. You are also required to submit an electronic version through Turnitin. Without both the electronic and hardcopy versions of the document your assessment will not be graded.

**** Penalty for late submission: -5% for missing the 10 am deadline on the day of submission; -10 % for each day late thereafter. Any assessment submitted more than five days late will be marked as a 0%. ****

Plagiarism

As noted in the Student Handbook, plagiarism will not be tolerated. Not only will Turnitin be used to detect plagiarism, but subject teachers will confer with each other on suspected cases. The maximum penalty for plagiarism will be the grade of zero.

Key Requirements

Your IR-folio 1 should provide a critical review of the article and a further research topic or question that derives from the issues and/or topics addressed in the article.

Critical Analysis:

The analysis should be about deciphering/exploring the key arguments/points Carr makes in the chapter. In doing so, you need to show evidence of your critical engagement of the text. It means giving an informed and constructive analysis based on your interpretation of the text and your literature research.

As part of your critical analysis, the review must explore the content on a much deeper level and present the reader with an account that you not only understand the text but also its relationship to larger questions in IR.

This means considering Carr’s points/arguments within the broader context of IR. For example, one may ask and explore the question such as, ‘how do/should we determine what is real from unreal in IR?’.

Question/Topic for Further Research

You are expected to come up with ONE specific further research question or topic, and provide a full explanation on the significance of it. For this, you must consider the limit or shortfalls of Carr’s argument and introduce a specific question or topic that advances the knowledge in the subject area.

Overall structure

Your IR-Folio should be well structured. It must have an introduction, main body and conclusion. You will be assessed on the quality of your IR-Folio structure, e.g. the structure within each paragraph and flow of logic from one paragraph to the next.

Referencing: Reference List (NOT Bibliography)

You are expected to utilise the writings of other IR scholars, and other media and academic sources in your literature review. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you do referencing for this assignment. Your reference list must only include the references that are cited in the text.

Key Recommendations

You are assessed on the content of your critical analysis. However, your writing must be intelligible, i.e. if the marker cannot understand what is written in the essay, the marker cannot give a mark. This is why it is very important that you write several drafts of the assignment, proofread each draft and utilise the Writing Centre.

· Do literature research, i.e. look up on articles/books that are written on topics that are relevant to the chapter.

· Use the Writing Centre: to get a good mark, your review must be well written.

· Write several drafts: proofread your work several times until you are absolutely satisfied with it.

· Read the coursework marking schemes stated in the course syllabus.
