One Canada Square is a skyscraper in Canary Wharf, London. It was the tallest building in the United Kingdom from 1990 to 2010, standing at 770 feet (235 m) above ground level[16] and containing 50 storeys. In late 2010, it was surpassed by The Shard (completed in July 2012) which stands at 309.6 metres (1,016 ft).

One Canada Square was designed by principal architect Cesar Pelli, who based the design and shape mainly on theWorld Financial Center and the Elizabeth Tower. The building is clad with expensive stainless steel. One of the predominant features of the building is the pyramid roof which contains a flashing aircraft warning light, a rare feature for buildings in the United Kingdom. The distinctive pyramid pinnacle is at 800 feet (240 m) above sea level.

One Canada Square is primarily used for offices, though there are some retail units on the lower ground floor. It is a prestigious location for offices and as of November 2015 was 100% let.[17] The building is recognised as a London landmark and it has gained much attention through film, television and other media when its status was the tallest building in the United Kingdom and continues to gain attention.

Euston Tower

Euston Tower is a skyscraper located in the London Borough of Camden. It is a typical example of an International Style skyscraper, constructed with a steel frame and glass curtain walls. It is situated at the intersection of Tottenham Court Road and Euston Road, the official address being 286 Euston Road.

Euston Tower is 124 metres (407 ft) high, and has 36 floors. It was designed by Sidney Kaye and is aesthetically very similar to the CIS TowerandNew Century House (1962), both in Manchester. The Euston Tower also affected German architects. The Steglitzer_Kreisel, start of construction 1968,in Berlin looks almost identical.

History

Construction of Euston Tower began in 1965 and was completed in 1970. Among Londoners, the Euston Tower was most famous for being the home of Capital Radio from 1973 until 1997, when it moved to Leicester Square. It was common for Capital to announce itself as broadcasting "from the top of the Euston Tower", but in fact Capital's offices and studios were all based in the ground- and first-floor podium sections rather than in the actual skyscraper section.ITV station Thames Television occupied premises adjacent to the tower from 1970 to 1992 although these have subsequently been redeveloped.

The tower was designed by Sir Norman Foster's team of architects. Construction began in 1999 and was completed in 2002. There are 45 floors in the 200 metres (656 ft) high tower, the joint fourth tallest in the United Kingdom with the nearby Citigroup Centre, and the second tallest in

Proposal

With the movement of HSBC Group's headquarters from Hong Kong to London in 1993, the firm decided that having thousands of employees scattered across the City of London was not an ideal situation. Between 1995 and 1997 a number of proposals were considered, including the redevelopment of the previous Group Head Office at 10 Lower Thames Street, London. However the DS-2 plot at Canary Wharf was chosen for the location and space available.

The topping out ceremony took place on 7 March 2001, with the hoisting in of the final steel girder attended by bankers, journalists and contractors. The first HSBC employees began work in the building on 2 September 2002, with phased occupation completed by 17 February 2003, and the building's official opening, by Sir John Bond, taking place on 2 April 2003.
