Education in Ukraine

Present day independent Ukraine has a well-developed system of education which matches the standards of the developed countries. Pre-school education is not compulsory and is fee-paying. Most parents take their children to nursery schools or kindergartens at the age of 3. Up to the age of 5 children mostly eat, sleep and play there, but in senior groups they are taught the basics of arithmetic, reading, writing, arts and in some schools foreign languages.

Compulsory secondary education begins at the age of 6-7 and is free in state schools and fee-paying in private ones. Some schools, especially those with language slant, have preparatory classes. Secondary education includes three stages: primary (1st- 3d grades), basic (4th-9th grades) and senior (10th -12th grades). In regular secondary schools children start learning foreign languages from the 2nd grade and have fewer lessons of language a week than specialised language schools that start teaching languages from the 1st grade. Recently new types of schools have appeared: gymnasiums and lycees. In addition, there are schools with technical, computer, mathematical, law, pedagogical and art slant. All the subjects in the secondary schools are obligatory but there are optional courses that students of senior grades can take in addition to the required ones.

Extra-curricular activities usually include a variety of sports and drama clubs, interest groups and various school parties.

Those senior students who want to get qualification alongside the secondary education, can go to vocational training schools. Post-secondary education is provided by technical schools and colleges of 1st and 2nd Level of Accreditation that train young specialists in different trades.

Institutions of higher learning (higher educational establishments) include universities, academies, institutes and conservatories. They all hold entrance examinations to select the best applicants to be their students. Among the best known higher educational establishments there are Shevchenko Kyiv National University, Kyiv Polytechnic University, International Independent University «Kyiv-Mohyla Academy», Kyiv State Conservatory, Lviv State University, Kharkiv National University, Kharkiv State Pedagogical University, Kharkiv State Polytechnic University and many others.

Post graduate education begins after the last year of studies and usually results in theses on the chosen scientific topic and the degree of the Candidate of Science. Doctorate Degree is awarded for an outstanding scientific research.

The main task of higher education in our time is preparation of highly qualified specialists, well-versed in the latest achievements in domestic and foreign science and technology.

Text 2. OUR ACADEMY

We are first-year students of Prydneprovs’k State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture. It is one of the largest higher educational establishments in Ukraine. It was founded in 1930.

Our Academy trains specialists (civil engineers and architects) for the building industry in 19 specialties. About 5000 students are trained at the Academy, among them young people from some countries of Europe and Asia.

The training of specialists is effected at the following departments of the Academy: Industrial and Residential (Housing) Construction, Architectural, Mechanical, Construction-Technological, Economical and Construction.

All instruction, educational and scientific work is organized and carried out by 38 chairs numbering about 677 highly-qualified teachers many of whom are authors of text-books and manuals used in the teaching process. Many of our teachers are outstanding specialists in various fields of technology and science. There are 84 Doctors of Sciences and about 286 Masters of Sciences at the Academy.

The Academy trains engineers and architects using two forms of instruction: day-time and extra-mural, giving them the most up-to-date theoretical and practical training in accordance with the demands of the time. There are also the Institute of non-stop specialized education, preparatory additional training and specialized training for improving professional skills; scientific and research complex; the Institute of examination, projecting and research and others in the academy.

Every day students have lectures and practical hours. They attend lectures on different subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, History of Ukraine, Philosophy, Drawing, Descriptive Geometry, etc. Beginning from the second course various special subjects are introduced.

The academic year is divided into two terms. Students take exams at the end of each term.

The course at the Academy lasts 5 years. On completion of studies the student presents a graduation thesis and takes the finals.

Post-graduate courses in about 16 specialties are in store for those who choose to continue their professional and scientific training.

Scientific work is done at the Academy not only by the teaching staff and post-graduates but also by the students in well-equipped laboratories in specialized classrooms, in a computing centre, in libraries, reading-hall and drawing halls.

The scientists of the Academy have extensive scientific contacts with specialists from many countries at international level taking an active part in numerous conferences and seminars. An international exchange of students grows from year to year and has already become common practice raising the future specialists’ qualification.

Besides studies the students have full facilities for rest and recreation: a sports complex with a swimming pool, a sporting camp and a preventorium. The Academy also has 9 hostels with modern conveniences.

Some of the students take part in different clubs and societies.

The prospects for the development of the Academy are quite hopeful.
