Гарай: Good afternoon, everyone!

Саша: What is your attitude to the new law?

Гарай: I’m happy to be here today and to stand for the law passing these days. Yes, I vote for the law which would strict socializing on the Internet, because I consider that communication via chats and social networks alters the pitch of communication to the poorer level.

Катя: What can you say about the communication on the Internet from the point of view of philology?

Гарай: Youngsters tend to make their words shorter while carrying a decisive meaning, using abbreviations, for example and smiles instead of punctuation. They usually reach to other people, maintain relationships or even persuade others by a limited vocabulary, which consists of slang, jargon and swear words which are very popular among teenagers nowadays. Surely, these are recent and amazingly fast advances in the development of language, and all of us would agree, I think, that a new problem is arising here. Basically it means that youngsters tend to lose all the shades of the language, they don’t know it. They have big problems of phrasing their messages. They leave too much unsaid and unspoken because they don’t know how to express themselves. They can’t get to the point, they are at loss for words.

Саша: Can you specify, please, what you mean? How does Internet communication affect their language?

Гарай: They don’t follow grammar rules because it’s not a trend, and then, after a period of time, they don’t follow rules because they have forgotten them or had never known rules because they can’t see any reason for it. They think good, standard language won’t be useful in later life. Its crucial shortcoming is that they are wrong. Their vocabulary is limited, as I’ve already said, and it’s clear that their way of thinking becomes limited. They through smiles to each other and two-three words of colloquial layer while talking nonsense, but in face-to-face communication unfortunately become too reticent and there could be observed a breakdown in communication. Of course we can’t go against the general tendency, but we could correct the way of it somehow. I can assure you, that if people, especially teenagers, read classic literature more, study language and love language more, it allows for coping with their problems in communication and give a new dimension how to interact in a proper way.

Голун: Yes, sure.The principle medium of interaction between people is language. Reaching out to others is a very difficult task if people aren’t able to give their utterances their distinctive meaning. That is also the main problem of my daughter. E-mail and social networks have diminished the value of personal contact, some people argue. E-mail is so convenient that it has replaced millions of face to face meetings and even more hand written sentences.
