Forensic Speech Outline
Introduction:
Attention getter and credibility: personal story “The importance of the past.”
Relevance: I would like my audience to reflect on their own family values (strong bonds between family members and respect for elderly) by learning about the significance of the past to the people who fought in WW II.
Thesis: The Victory Day song signifies not only the importance of the past to Russian people, but also conveys many of the values inherent to Russian culture.
Preview: I would like to talk about two main points:
Ø The song is important and popular, because it glorifies WW II. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Soviet victory in the WW II the Victory Day was written. Regarded as a symbol of Victory this song has been invariably performed during all the Victory Day celebrations since then.
Ø The song is also important because it produced strong family values. Every Russian family was affected by WW II. Thus family in Russia is very closely knit.
Body:
Claim: One reason the Victory Day song is important and popular is because it glorifies WW II and signifies the importance of the past to Russian people.
Evidence:
Ø Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941. WW II lasted for 4 years and took about 27 million soviet lives. To remember the war and the victory the Russians created a national holiday called Victory Day.
Ø In order to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Soviet victory in WW II the Victory Day song was written. As Vladimir Shainsky, a well-known Russian veteran composer, said: “The song seemed to have turned back the time. Although written three decades after the war, it now seems that it was this song that helped us to gain the victory.” (Source 1: Panin, V.)
Transition: The song is associated with trains with soldiers, who are coming back home and crying women, who are embracing with their husbands, fathers and brothers. No wonder, the war had a strong impact on the attitude towards family.
Claim: The song is also significant and popular, because its remembrance of WW II produced strong family values.
Evidence:
Ø After the collapse of the USSR many social values were lost. However, family is still the highest priority with the Russians. In 2002 the Institute of Social Research in St. Petersburg conducted the survey and 78% of respondents ranked family most highly (Source 3: Golubev, E.).
Ø Family is very closely knit. Young people take care of their elderly. As the professor of State Institute of Family in Moscow, Nikitina wrote in her article: “The family today is still based on high respect and honor of elderly due to Russia’s historical past”(Source 4: Nikitina, L.).
Conclusion:
Review and relevance: I hope I have provided you with understanding of the fact that the Victory Day song is important for the people who fought in WW II. They have not only the nostalgia for the past, but also strong family connections. That could be a good lesson for young people.
