When you are black

If you are in the black team the summary of your task is to trick the table into believing that you are red and make them vote off a red citizen instead of you or another black one + at night shoot the least suspicious players.

First of all read the chapter about being a red citizen for the information what you should not do being black.

Practice shows that being nervous is the main problem for beginners black players. So if you are a beginner, calm down and persuade yourself that this is just a game and nothing will happen if you lose. Learning to control one's emotions is a crucial skill for a mafia player.

In order to talk like a red citizen it helps to imagine that you are red and try to analyse other players' speeches and actions the way you would do if you were really a red citizen.

As for tactics of a black player, it strongly depends on a current game situation, because the very task you need to complete (masking and pretending), provides for a lot of improvisation, so it is much more difficult to give recommendations (like with a red player or the sheriff), though there are several rules a good mafia member should stick to:

1. General recommendation: behave naturally, as a good red citizen, but act slightly in favor of black players.

2. When there is no sheriff in the game, black players should vote together! Remember, that only you know that you vote with black players, red citizens don't know this. You can also vote together on the 2nd day (when there is still too little information and any red player can make a mistake), if you see that a couple of red players are already against another red player. How to vote together? If the don is in the game, vote like the don, if not, it's quite easy to agree with just two of you (e.g. one shows before the voting, for whom to vote).

3. Vote against your black teammate: a) if the whole table is strongly against your teammate (you feel that they will leave the table anyway) b) if most of the table is against another player and you are sure with your vote your team member doesn't leave the game.

4. If your false sheriff revealed well, support them.

5. If you are checked by the sheriff, reveal as a false sheriff. This way you'll have a chance to survive.

6. If you have been voted off, you have 2 options for your final speech: a) admit you are black and tell whom to shoot next. b) tell that you are red and the city made a terrible mistake. Choose the one that will be more beneficial for the remaining black players in a given situation. For example, if you are the don and found the sheriff, it may be good to openly tell black players to shoot them. Or if you have voted with other black players and supported them, admitting being black, you do them a very bad favor.

7. If you are shooting by orders and you missed, the rule of thumb is as follows: again shoot at the player you missed. (e.g. your orders are players 3, 5, 7. On the first night you missed at player 3. The second night you again shoot 3).

8. Shoot out of turn: a) the sheriff when you know who they are (unless you play with a false sheriff) b) a checked red player (because nobody suspects them). If there are two checked red players, remember the rule: first shoot the one, whose number is less (e.g. if the checked players are 2 and 5, first you shoot 2, then 5).

9. In the situation, when 4 players are at the table before the night, and you are the only mafia among them, and there are no sheriff or checked red players among the 3 red players, it's better to miss at night, so on the last day there remain 4 players to guess from, not 3 (in both variants the situation is critical). This way you will have more chances to vote off a red player and win the game, because more people will be under suspicion.

10. If you are voted off on the 2nd day, it's a very good move to reveal as the false sheriff and give a black check of one of the citizens (the biggest luck if you hit the real sheriff!). If you do this confidently enough, the city has to eliminate your black check on the next day by the balance. And people will not believe the real sheriff so unconditionally, when he/she reveals.
