1) Find examples of using modal verbs in the text (must, can, may, to be to, should, ought to). Dwell on their meanings and rules of usage.

2) Draw five-pointed star on a piece of paper. Write on the tip of the first point “can”, on the second point “must”, on the third point “have to”, on the fourth point “may” and on the fifth point “should”.

3) Write a true sentence about yourself using each of the five words on the star. For example: I can speak a little French.

4) In pairs take turns to read each other sentences. The others in the group have to ask at least five questions about each of the sentences (e.g. Where did you learn French? How well can you speak it? Can you write it?).

5) In a final, open class, stage, report on interesting things you have learned about classmates.

VII. NETWORKING/PRESENTATION

1) Divide into 2 groups. Each group will be researching freedom of the press around the world and creating thermometers to rate how free the media in that country is. Assign each group one of the following countries: Russia, Great Britain.

2) Use all available resources to answer the following questions:

  1. What types of media are available for the dissemination of information in this country (e.g., television, radio, newspapers, etc.)? What organizations or individuals finance these media?
  2. How might the beliefs of the owners or workers of each medium influence the material and how it is presented?
  3. What laws control what can and cannot appear in the media?
  4. In the past twenty years, have these laws changed? If so, how?
  5. Does the population have access to news sources from other countries? If so, give examples. If not, explain why not.

3) Once research is completed, groups should analyze their research to assess how much freedom is allowed in the media. Then create a poster with a thermometer that illustrates the level of freedoms in the researched country’s media. On the scale for thermometer, “1” should represent the most restricted and “10” should represent complete freedom. Posters should be displayed in the classroom, and each group should present their ratings and explanations of their choices using facts from their research.
