  4. How To Make A Good First Impression

We have mentioned the importance of dress but perhaps not delved into how it can help you and what you should be wearing.

The clothes you wear work in two ways:

1) As an outward sign to everyone as to who you are, how much you value your image and, in some cases, the level you are at in the organization.

2) As an inward prop for increasing your confidence and making you feel positive.

Whether you feel comfortable or not with this first statement, we make assumptions about people based on the clothes they wear. Be aware of the messages you are giving through your clothes and make sure they are the messages you want to convey. It is quite easy to change your image through clothes and therefore, if you feel that you do not emit sufficient presence in meetings, you can start by looking at your work wardrobe.

Be honest about your current work wardrobe – does it suggest someone who is highly visible in meetings or someone sitting back?

Colours can help but they are not the only story. Wearing a flash of bright colour can get you noticed, and that can be in a pattern on a blouse or a stylish tie. Even in a company that wears basic, neutral colours, you can experiment with a scarf or coloured accessories. Most items (pens, notebooks, folders, phone cases, briefcases and even laptops) are available in a full range of colours, and you could have a signature colour that marks you out from the rest.

If you feel that you are not making a sufficient impact, look at what other people are wearing – but not those at your level; look to the level above. Also pick out someone who you feel has real presence and see whether you can pinpoint what it is in the way that they dress that either confirms or asserts that presence – and then copy it.

Good-quality, well-cut clothes will always be noticed, but do not think that this is all about money. There are some great ‘ replica’ clothes these days that include the detail of more expensive items; you just need to look for them.

Another trick is to buy a good-fitting jacket from a regular clothes store and customize it – for example by changing the buttons. Suddenly it looks (and therefore you also look) unique and different.

The second point was that clothing can be an inward prop to increase our confidence. When you know that you look good, you walk a few inches taller, and project yourself differently. You feel assertive and authoritative, and this will mean that you take a more active part in the meeting, and feel comfortable putting forward your point of view.
