Задание 1. В каждом из предлагаемых ниже предложений есть слово или словосочетание, нуждающееся либо в расширении, либо в сужении значения. Опираясь на внутрифразовый контекст, переведите их, пользуясь приёмами конкретизации или генерализации.

1. Things look promising.

2. The meal was served at 6 p.m.

3. I’m sure you’ll like the place.

4. He searched every inch of the ground but in vain.

5. The five-minute meeting with the staff was over.

6. Our challenge now is to promote the ideas of civilized market.

Задание 2. Не переводя всего предложения, определите, каким словом вы перевели бы существительное «man/men», которое требует конкретизации.

Задание 3. Переведите следующие предложения, производя необходимые виды трансформаций (перестановки, замены, добавления, опущения).

1. The jet airliner carried 78 passengers and 4 crew.

2. He watched the young man out of the room.

3. The Commonwealth countries handled a quarter of the world’s trade.

4. The leader in this transformation was Britain.

5. Economic historians disagree in their assessment of when the Industrial revolution actually began.

6. Under British rule, the American colonies developed a thriving merchant class but relatively little industry.

7. Manufacturers needed adequate supplies of raw materials and natural resources.

8. Coal was necessary to power factories.

9. A further prerequisite for the growth of industry was an adequate supply of labor.

Задание 4. В данных предложениях предпочтительным или единственно возможным является антонимический перевод. Перед тем как переводить предложения, определите, в каких случаях есть возможность выбора из двух или более вариантов, а в каких нормы русского языка диктуют единственный вариант перевода.

1. Their attitude was not unfriendly.

Задание 6. Переведите на русский язык следующий текст, производя необходимые виды трансформаций. При переводе используйте материалы из задания 5.

The dollar’s decline is part of a much larger and more consequential rebalancing in the global economy, the impact of which will differ significantly from country to country. Because the United States are continuing to run a large trade deficit the depreciation of the dollar is largely unavoidable over the nearest future.

The impact of the fall will vary widely. At the moment, it is most acutely felt in Europe, where the Euro has surged to record levels against the dollar. No wonder European exporters complain of competitive pressures while European tourists are flooding the United States.

The phenomenon is less pronounced in Asia. There, ten Asian currencies have appreciated just 16 per cent against the dollar in the last five years. The resulting depreciation of Asian currencies versus the Euro has bolstered already-robust Asian exports.

How will a weaker dollar affect Americans? The most immediate impact of the dollar’s fall is being felt through the related surge in oil prices and other raw materials. These higher costs will result in declining profit margin, price inflation and greater pressure on wages. What explains these striking divergences among currencies and countries? The fact is that currency moves do not simply represent what ought to happen, but what governments allow to happen. For the last few years, Europe has allowed its currency to move freely in response to market forces. In contrast, certain Asian countries, led by China, have been reluctant to allow such flexibility, lest it disrupt the dynamics of a truly historic breakout phase in growth. This combination has meant that the Euro has done the bulk of the work in ensuring the dollar weakness.
